Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez is likely heading to the disabled list, New York manager Aaron Boone said on Sunday.

Sanchez suffered a right groin/hip abductor injury while running to first base after he hit a ground ball in the 10th inning of New York's 7-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

He pulled up awkwardly after the play and was removed from the game. He is expected to have an MRI on Monday.

"It's bothering me right now," Sanchez said through a translator after the game, via

"What can I say, that's how baseball is sometimes. You never want something bad to happen to you, but that's part of baseball. Now I'm hoping it's not a long time."

Sanchez has struggled at the plate this season. He has slashed just .194/.292/.441 but he has belted 14 home runs and tallied 41 RBIs.

The 25-year-old was an All-Star in 2017, when he hit .278 with 33 home runs and 93 RBIs.

The Yankees hold an MLB-best 50-25 record.
