Mac McClung had a massive impact on the All-Star weekend, as he practically injected new life into the Slam Dunk Contest. After rising to stardom overnight, McClung shared an exchange with NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal and how "Big Diesel" motivated him to win it.

McClung was one of the most spoken about players during the All-Star weekend. Considering that he was on a two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, he certainly made the most of his opportunity at the slam dunk contest.

For context, the Slam Dunk Contest has historically been one of the most highly anticipated events of the All-Star Saturday night. WIth some of the best athletes in the league competing in a display of jumping prowess, fans couldn't help but tune in for the latest iteration.

Unfortunately, recent editions of the event haven't generated the same kind of traction. Especially in light of last year's pathetic display, fans expected very little this year given the pool of competitors. However, McClung had a surprise in store. Starting off hot with with a reverse, board tap dunk over two people, the guard had fans jumping out of their seats.

Mac McClung continued to turn it up with every dunk. After earning a perfect 50-points in three of his four dunk attempts, he practically coasted to a win. Needless to say, his performances earned him a lot of fame very quickly. In a recent interview with Fox Sports' Melissa Rohlin, McClung shared his experiences before and at the dunk contest.

Considering how nervous he was before the event, McClung recalled an interaction he had with O'Neal where he recalled the legend's advice:

"Nobody knows your name. Make em remember your name."

Four jaw-dropping dunks later, it seems difficult to believe that anybody wouldn't have heard his name. McClung had the attention of basketball players and fans alike. Superstars Steph Curry and LeBron James also shared their comments to give props to the young guard for his display.

Mac McClung saves dunk contest

Philadelphia 76ers guard Mac McClung undoubtedly resurrected the AT&T Slam Dunk Contest. There's almost no debate on the matter.

Given the direction in which the NBA is headed, the 3-point contest has emerged as a far more interesting event. Considering that the contestant pool featured virtually no star-caliber players, with many unwilling to participate, fans were already tuning out at the event. However, Mac McClung gave fans something to take note of.

After his first dunk, the guard followed up with another impressive jam to inject new life into the arena. Although he didn't achieve a perfect score due to Lisa Leslie's questionable scoring, the air was positively buzzing with excitement.

The final-round showdown against Trey Murphy III saw the best of both contestants. However, McClung delivered a memorable final dunk to win the contest. Representing his alma mater and throwing down a 540 in the dunk contest finals is one way to earn viral status.

While McClung may not see a whole lot of time with the 76ers in the regular season, he will most definitely be a fan-favorite. With expectations of seeing him return next year, we look forward to seeing what's in store for the young guard.
