Jeff Capel's lucrative contract with University of Pittsburgh i

With fans consistently calling for University of Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel to be sacked, we take a look at his contract. It is, after all, a possible reason why he might not be going anywhere soon.

The question of whether or not Pittsburgh will decide to change coaches will be largely influenced by financial considerations. It has been reported that Coach Capel's buyout after this season will amount to $15 million, and this figure drops to $5 million the following season.

Jeff Capel was signed to a two-year contract extension by Heather Lyke on January 8, 2020, which puts him under contract through the 2026-27 season. This means that Capel will be paid a $15 million sum if he is sacked before the start of next season. Capel earned $3,533,438 in salary in the 2021-22 campaign.

In recent years, fans have grown impatient with Jeff Capel and believe that the program was in a better position before he took over from Kevin Stallings. Nevertheless, the likely reason for a potential return for Coach Capel's return next season might have little to do with what the fans want.

Jeff Capel responds to disrespect towards brother Jason from North Carolina fans

Following a hard-fought victory by the Pitt Panthers at the Dean E. Smith Center, the team was seen celebrating in the hallway and visitors locker room. However, amidst the excitement, assistant coach Jason Capel erupted into an emotional outburst. It was seemingly directed at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

According to a Pittsburgh Sports Now reporter who was present at the scene, Jason was overheard saying:

“Y’all gonna disrespect me? All I did for this program? Y’all gonna boo me? I held this sh*t together when Matt Doherty tore it apart.”

Jason referred to his time as a player for UNC from 1998 to 2002, where he had a successful college career. He started 114 out of 120 games and was the team's captain and leading scorer in his senior season.

During the postgame press conference, Pitt head coach Jeff Capel addressed his brother’s outburst:

"It’s a complicated relationship with him and North Carolina. He loves it, but I think at times he doesn’t feel that back. And the Carolina fans were pretty sh**ty towards him. Excuse my language, but pretty, pretty nasty.
"For me, it’s just really interesting man, because I grew up in the state, and this is one of the most tradition-laden programs in the history of college athletics. Not just college basketball. You hear about the Carolina family, and it’s just amazing to me that their social media people would do that. Obviously, the game was emotional.”

As to whether this will help matters remains unclear. We shall just have to wait and see.
