Marcus Freeman is an American football coach, plying his trade with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. During his playing career, he received second-team All-Big Ten recognition in 2008 and was a four-year letter winner for the Buckeyes from 2004 to 2008. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round and participated in the 2009 Senior Bowl. Before his playing career was cut short by a medical problem, he played for the Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, and Bears.

Freeman hails from Huber Heights, Ohio, and attended Wayne High School. He played college football at Ohio State University from 2004 to 2008, when he graduated. Throughout his playing career, he played as a linebacker and won four Big Ten Championships. He also played in three BCS bowl games and two National Championship games. Freeman graduated with a B.S. degree from Ohio State in 2007 and received his M.S. degree in sports management in 2011.

Marcus Freeman's coaching history'

Marcus Freeman began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for Ohio State in 2010. Following that stint, Freeman coached linebackers at Kent State from 2011 to 2012. From 2013 to 2015, he was the co-defensive coordinator at Purdue, and in 2016, he became the defensive coordinator.

Cincinnati (2017–2020)

Freeman became the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bearcats football team on December 13, 2016. The Bearcats' defense became one of the finest in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) under Freeman. Among the top 15 in the NCAA FBS in all three categories, Freeman's defense topped the AAC in rushing defense, scoring defense, and total defense in 2018.

For the second consecutive season, the Bearcats led the 2019 AAC in scoring defense and placed in the top three in both rushing and total defense. Freeman was named the 247Sports Defensive Coordinator of the Year for the 2020 season and was a finalist for the Broyles Award.

Notre Dame (2021–present)

Freeman joined the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in January 2021 as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. However, it didn't start well for the young coach as Freeman became the first head coach in Notre Dame history to begin his career with three defeats when he lost to Marshall and No. 2 Ohio State in the 2022 season.

For the first time in twelve years, Notre Dame made it to the national championship game in 2024. As the first Asian American and African American head coach to win a Division I national college football title, Freeman made history. But the Cotton Bowl Classic champion, the Ohio State Buckeyes, defeated them 34–23 in the title game. As of August 2025, he has a record of 33 wins and 10 losses for Notre Dame.
