Freeman was the linebackers coach at Kent State from 2011-2012 and at Purdue from 2013 to 2015. In 2016, he was promoted to the post of co-defensive coordinator at Purdue while continuing his role as the linebackers coach.
He transferred to the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017 as their defensive coordinator and assistant linebackers coach and resigned in 2020. Freeman's defensive unit at Cincinnati was remarkable, which helped him become the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame in 2021.
