The university's board of regents authorized a one-year contract extension for Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck through the 2030 season in July 2025, along with an increase in retention compensation. Fleck continues to earn $6 million a year. Fleck will receive $1 million for remaining at Minnesota through the end of 2025, thanks to a retention bonus clause that was inserted into his contract in an update last year after UCLA courted him. The yearly sweetener rises by $2.3 million to $1.2 million in 2026, $1.3 million in 2027, $1.4 million in 2028, $1.5 million in 2029, and $1.6 million in 2030.
According to last year's terms, Fleck would get retention bonuses beginning in 2024 at $700,000, which would progressively increase to $1.2 million in 2029. The contract is also amended in terms of the buyout structure. In the case of a buyout, Fleck's contract has been reduced from $7 million to $5.5 million in the first year. For the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth years, it is $4.5 million, $3 million, $2 million, $1 million, and $0, respectively.
