Toss is perhaps one of the most crucial events to take place in a cricket match. It will not be wrong to say that the toss can alter the course of the match. In cricket, the two contesting teams take turns to bat and field. The winner of the toss gets to choose whether to bat or field.
In a coin toss, the two captains of the participating teams meet in the middle of the ground in the presence of an announcer and the match referee along with an occasional mascot. The captain of the team playing at their home ground or proxy-home ground is handed the coin to be flipped. The other captain gets to call either heads or tails. After the coin is tossed and comes to a rest on the ground, the side facing up is called the result of the coin. If the result matches the call from the away captain, he wins the toss and gets to decide whether to bat or to field. Otherwise it is the other captain who wins.
But then how does the toss become such an important event? This is because winning the toss can actually turn out to be very beneficial. As we know the pitch conditions and external factors such as dew, wind direction, lights etc. changes during the match, winning the toss can help a team to decide the conditions under which they will bat or field.

Why is toss important in IPL?
IPL is played in the T20 format. Although the format is not long enough to let the pitch conditions change drastically, winning the toss doesn't become as important as it does in Test cricket. However, with certain teams, winning the toss helps them to play to their strengths.
For example if a team has a deep batting line-up which is known for its successful run-chases, that team would like to win the toss and bat second. It helps a team to play their natural game. Similarly, in certain instances where the dew factor comes into play in the later half of the match, the winner of the toss will again prefer to bat second.
But if it's a day/night match on a hot summer afternoon, captains winning the toss prefer to bat first, so that his fielders don't have to exert themselves under the excruciating sunlight and heat. So, although winning the toss in IPL, doesn't guarantee a victory, it sure makes it a little bit easier and achievable.
