Brian Ortega is among the top contenders in the UFC, where he competes in the featherweight division. He fought in different fight promotions after transforming into a professional fighter. Ortega was interested in combat sports as a teen and started training in jiu-jitsu at the age of 13. Ortega made his professional debut in 2010 by squaring off against John Sassone at Gladiator Challenge: Maximum Force. In his inaugural professional showdown, Brian Ortega dispatched Sassone by clutching him in a triangle choke, forcing him to submit in the first round to secure a victory. Brian Ortega faced Carlos Graces at Respect in The Cage 10 on March 12, 2011, for the RTC featherweight title. He won the fight via unanimous decision and won the title.

Brian Ortega locked horns with Keoni Koch at RFA 12 on January 24, 2014, for the RFA featherweight championship. Ortega and Koch threw the kitchen sink at each other in a closely fought battle, which Ortega won at last via a split decision. He made his debut in the UFC against Mike De La Torre at UFC on Fox: Lawler vs. Brown on July 26, 2014. He won the fight but was later overturned to a no-contest due to Ortega testing positive for drostanolone. Ortega competed for the UFC featherweight title against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 266, on September 25, 2021. He went neck-to-neck with Volkanovski throughout the five rounds of the bout, came up short in the end, and lost the fight via unanimous decision.
