Kamaru Usman is an American mixed martial artist who dominated the welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for years. Usman won the Ultimate Fighter 21 tournament and made his way into the coveted mixed martial arts promotion, where he competes largely in the welterweight division. Usman moved to the United States of America with his family in his childhood.

He developed an impressive amateur career in wrestling in the United States after getting interested in combat sports during his high school years. He has a record of 53 wins and 3 losses as an amateur in wrestling, Usman changed the course of his career to mixed martial arts after injuries affected his wrestling career.

Kamaru Usman made his professional debut in mixed martial arts against David Glover on November 30, 2012, at RFA 5, in Kearney, Nebraska, United States of America. He won the match by knocking Glover out in the second round of the fight. In his second professional mixed martial arts showdown, he faced Jose Caceres at CFA 15, on May 24, 2013, in Coral Gables, Florida, United States of America. Caceres made quick work of Usman and defeated him by submission in the first round of the showdown, handing Usman the first loss of his professional career.

Ever since suffering his first loss, Kamaru Usman recovered to a brilliant win streak which started on December 14, 2013, and went on for close to a decade before Leon Edwards defeated him at UFC 278. Kamaru Usman has a professional mixed martial arts record of 20 wins and 3 losses. Two of his losses which came in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) resulted against the welterweight champion Leon Edwards. Usman lost the welterweight title to Leon Edwards at UFC 278.

The duo clashed in a rematch for the title at UFC 286 but Edwards was able to defeat Usman and keep the title. He has remained a dominant champion in the welterweight division where he successfully defended his title five times before losing it to Edwards. Usman is scheduled to square off against the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294, on October 21, 2023, at Etihad Arena, Dubai, United Arab Emirates in a middleweight bout.
