Patrick Mahomes' wife Brittany became part-owner of the NWSL's Kansas City Current in December 2020, along with Angie and Chris Long. The city originally had a women's professional soccer team until 2017, when operations closed up and the team moved to Utah.

It stayed in Utah for just three seasons until the Longs and Brittany Mahomes bought the team and moved it back to Kansas City. In just their second season, the Current reached the NWSL Championship game, but fell short in it.

In January 2023, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback announced that he had bought a stake in the Current's ownership group.

The Current have their very own training facility that opened in 2021 and the team zeroed in on a new stadium in the downtown area that will be specifically used by them.

Two-time world champion goalie Ashlyn Harris spoke about the impact and investments that have been made in women's soccer and how it's changing the game.

Harris said that the investment made into the franchise includes the training facility. She added that the new stadium makes the team a desirable employer.

"They were the last-place team. Came in, had all this money invested in the team. Built out a training facility. Built out an incredible ownership group. Him (Patrick Mahomes) and his wife. Last year, they were in the Championship game. In my opinion they did not have a Championship team, but investment does incredible things, right?
"It's a no-brainer. Now, they're building out the first-ever specific women's soccer stadium in Kansas City. Now their team is out of this world at this point, all the best players in the world, because they're attracted to that investment."

Harris applauded the Mahomes and other investors in women's professional sports for sparing no expense.

After signing his 10-year contract extension that was worth up to $500 million, with the Kansas City Chiefs, quarterback Patrick Mahomes began investing his money. He has become part of the ownership group of MLB's Kansas City Royals as well as the MLS' Sporting Kansas City team. He has also reportedly bought a stake in a Major League Pickleball team.

However, his investment in Kansas City is what will leave a lasting impact even after he is done playing. Although the exact amount of how much he and his wife Brittany have invested into the Kansas City Current is unknown, it's assumed to be a high price tag. This is considering the investment that has been made by the ownership group.

When the announcement was made for the new 11,000-seat stadium for the Current, it's cost was said to be about $70 million. It was also announced that the venue would be funded by the ownership group. The $18 million training facility was also funded by the team owners.
