Alyssa Thomas: A Brief Biography

Alyssa Thomas is a professional WNBA player for the Phoenix Mercury. She was drafted 4th overall in the 2014 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty but was immediately traded to the Connecticut Sun. Before entering the WNBA, Thomas had already cemented her status as a basketball star by holding the all-time scoring record (2356 points), rebounds (1235), as well as double-doubles (66) for her college, the University of Maryland. She is also one of three athletes in NCAW history with 6 triple-doubles.
Thomas is a 6-time WNBA All-Star (2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025), and also made her 1st All-WNBA 1st team selection in 2023 and followed it up in 2024. She was also part of the All-Rookie team in 2014. She is also a rebound champion (2023) and also won the WNBA steals leader title (2020). She has made the WNBA All-Defensive 1st teams twice and four times; she was named to the WNBA All-Defensive 2nd teams (2017, 2019, 2022, 2024). Thomas made history by being the only player in WNBA history to have a 15+, 15+, 10+ stat line with 0 turnovers.

Alyssa Thomas was born on April 12th, 1992, in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. She attended Central Dauphin High School and led her class to a total of 106 victories in 4 years, which also happens to be the most of any single class in school history. She finished her career at Central Dauphin as their all-time leading scorer with 2,289 points, which is among the top 50 all-time leading scorers in Pennsylvania history.

Alyssa Thomas used to play soccer when she was younger, but switched to basketball because she didn’t want to play in the open weather conditions. She was very attached to her mother as a kid and used to go with her everywhere, shyly hiding behind her mother, as per the WNBA website. However, her mother, Tina, is the complete opposite and is very vocal. She was gradually groomed to be tough and strong while carrying a winning mentality, which translates well to what we see her do on the court.
