Shubman Gill IPL Career

Following his impressive stint at the 2018 U-19 World Cup and domestic tournaments, Shubman caught the eye of the cricketing fraternity and was bought for INR 1.8 crores by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2018 IPL auction. Gill had a decent campaign with the bat for KKR but it was after getting drafted into the newly introduced Gujarat Titans that he found his groove and was instrumental in the Titans lifting the trophy in their maiden campaign (2022). Gill had a dream run in IPL 2023, bagging the Orange Cap for scoring 890 runs in 17 matches, including three centuries. He was appointed as the Titans’ skipper ahead of IPL 2024.

Shubman Gill International Career

Shubman Gill has had a tremendous start to his international career, with ODIs seeming to be his kingdom. The youngster has amassed 4098 runs across formats and is also on the list of batters with centuries in all formats.

Shubman Gill ODI Career

On the back of a mountain of runs posted by the Punjab-born batsman in the U-19 and domestic scene, Gill was added to India's squad for the limited-overs leg of their series against New Zealand in January 2019. On 31 January 2019, he made his One Day International (ODI) cricket debut against New Zealand in the fourth ODI match of the series at Seddon Park, Hamilton. Gill could only muster up nine runs in his 21-ball vigil at the crease and was snaffled up by Trent Boult.

However, he scored his maiden century against Zimbabwe in 2022 and started getting regular game time from the beginning of 2023. Gill made an impact immediately as he hammered a double ton against the New Zealanders, making him the youngest (23 years and 132 days) to achieve the feat. He became the quickest batter (38 innings) to achieve 2000 runs in ODIs, surpassing the record of the legendary Hashim Amla (40 innings). Gill also became only the fourth Indian after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli to achieve the ICC No. 1 ranking in the ODI format.

Shubman Gill Test Career

After hitting a double century against the West Indies A side in the Caribbean, Shubman Gill was instantly named in India's Test squad for their series against South Africa. However, with big names already in the team, the youngster had difficulty in breaking into the playing XI and he returned without donning the white flannels for his country. However, in February 2020, he was again named in India's Test squad, this time for their series against New Zealand Cricket. Gill played a huge role against Australia in the historic Gabba victory in 2021, scoring a match-winning 91 in India’s second innings.

However, the 24-year-old had a slight dip in form in Tests after that, failing in both WTC (World Test Championship) finals as well. Gill seems to have found his touch in the recently concluded series against England, scoring the second-most runs (452) in the series and a couple of centuries as well.
