Daniil Medvedev Early Life
Daniil Medvedev, a Moscow native, was encouraged to take tennis by his father. Ekaterina Kryuchkova, a veteran tennis coach who worked with players like Vera Zvonareva and other pros, was Medvedev's first tennis coach. Besides sports, Medvedev’s other early pursuits were harpsichord and guitar classes.
Before graduating early and enrolling in economics and business at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Medvedev attended a specialized school where he studied math and physics. He eventually gave up studies to focus on tennis.
Medvedev transferred to the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth, and Tourism, where he earned his coaching degree. He relocated with his family to Antibes, France, where he attended the tennis academy. Since Medvedev was born prematurely at the age of eight months, the Russian Armed Forces have designated him as "unsuitable" for recruitment. Due to a lack of support from the Russian Tennis Federation, Medvedev thought about playing under the flag of Kazakhstan (via tennisworldusa).
Medvedev made his major main draw debut at the 2017 Wimbledon, where he beat Stan Wawrinka, the then-third-ranked player in the world. He won his first ATP title in 2018, the Sydney Open. He made a breakthrough in 2019, entering the top 10 for the first time after winning two Masters titles that year. Medvedev, the third Russian man after Marat Safin and Yevgeny Kafelnikov in 1999 and 2000, got the world No. 1 ranking in February 2022, becoming the first individual outside the Big Three to do so since Andy Murray.
