American professional tennis player Emma Navarro was born on May 18, 2001. She went to the University of Virginia and won the NCAA Singles Championship in 2021. After turning professional in 2015, she has won a total of eight professional titles, one in the WTA Tour, and eight in the ITF Circuits as of December 2024. She has a singles career-high ranking of No. 8, reached in September 2024. Also, she reached the semifinals of the 2024 US Open, losing to Paula Badosa in straight sets.

Then world No. 8 Navarro was denied a seat at the WTA Finals because Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova was granted admittance due to a WTA regulation that grants a major winner a spot if they place in the top 20. She declined a position with her agent as an alternate, claiming she was still recovering from a recent illness. She won WTA Most Improved Player of the Year in December.

In the fourth round of the 2024 Wimbledon, Emma Navarro defeated then world No. 2, Coco Gauff, 6-4, 6-3. However, she lost to Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals. As a result, only two players in the top 10 were left in the women's draw: seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini and fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina.

This was Navarro's second win over a player ranked No. 2 or higher, advancing to her first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal. Her previous victory over a world No. 2 came at Indian Wells in March against Aryna Sabalenka. According to CBS Sports, Navarro made 16 unforced errors in the match, while Gauff made 25. Further, Gauff only converted 56% of her first serves, whereas Navarro made 74%.

Yulia Putintseva defeated world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the third round, marking the second major upset at Wimbledon. Going forward, Barbora Krejcikova won the event by defeating Jasmine Paolini 6–2, 2–6, 6–4 in the final.

According to CBS Sport, after her win, Navarro spoke to the crowd at center court. She said,

"Just really grateful to be out here on center court at a tournament with so much history and tradition that so many legends have played before me. It's a real honor, so thank you guys for coming out to watch and [I] can't wait to play again."
