The McMahon Family

The McMahon family is perhaps one of the most famous families in all of pro wrestling. They are the founders, former major owners, showrunners, and regular faces of WWE. In actuality, the family has played a comprehensive role in the huge success of WWE.

WWE, in its original form, was founded by either Jess McMahon or his son Vincent James McMahon. While this claim is disputed, there is no doubt in the fact that it was his son Vince McMahon, who took the company to new heights. However, he was not alone in this journey. There were a few other McMahons who never left his side in the whole process.

From his wife to his two children to a son-in-law, The McMahon family owned WWE up until April 2023 when they sold the company to Endeavour. Even after the sale, the McMahons continued to play major strategic roles in the promotion they built.

The McMahon Family

The McMahon family is one of the most well-known families in all of American sports. Its participation in pro-wrestling began around 1915 when Jess McMahons started organizing pro-wrestling shows. He organized shows almost the rest of his life and even began a promotion in 1953 alongside his son Vincent McMahon.

The two named the company Capitol Wrestling Corporation. Unfortunately, Jess passed away in 1954. Capitol Wrestling would go on to be known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation, then the World Wrestling Federation before finally being named World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2002.

Vincent McMahon retired from his business in 1982. Upon his retirement, his son Vince McMahon Jr. purchased the business and is credited with taking the business to the next level. He, alongside his wife, Linda McMahon introduced WrestleMania in addition to numerous concepts that would revolutionize pro-wrestling forever.

They were soon joined in business by their son Shane McMahon and daughter Stephanie McMahon. The latter’s husband Triple H also joined the business and currently is the COO of the company.

WWE was owned majorly by the McMahon family up until April 2023. In that month, a merger between WWE and UFC was announced by Endeavour Group which had acquired the McMahon’s company.

Jess McMahon

Jess McMahon was born on October 29, 1882, and was a first-generation pro-wrestling enthusiast of the iconic McMahon family. He started organizing pro-wrestling shows in 1915 and spent more than 20 years as a wrestling promoter at the Madison Square Garden, which is now considered the Mecca of professional wrestling.

It is said that he founded the Capitol Wrestling Promotion in 1953 alongside his second son Vincent James McMahon. He passed away in November 1954 due to a celebral hemorrhage and his son took over the pro-wrestling business of his father.

Vincent James McMahon

Born on July 6, 1914, Vincent James McMahon continued his father’s passion for pro wrestling and converted into something more organized. Whether he or his father founded the Capitol Wrestling Promotion is a matter up for discussion. However, there is no doubt in the fact that it was Vince who actually ran it.

During his tenure, the promotion was renamed to the WWWF and then WWF. In the words of The Fabulous Moolah, he was among the first promoters to split revenue gates with the wrestler. In 1982, upon his retirement, McMahon sold the company to his son Vince McMahon, and what happened next is history.

Vince McMahon

Vincent Kennedy McMahon was born on August 24, 1945, and was around 37 years old when he purchased the WWF from his father. When he acquired the company, pro-wrestling was a regional sport where promoters of various regions did not interfere the regions of other promoters. McMahon disapproved of this idea and wanted to nationalize his promotion.

He decided to split from the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance), brought in Hulk Hogan, and then bet his life savings on WrestleMania within the first few years of his takeover. Fortunately, his plan succeeded and he managed to make WWE a household name during his tenure as the leader of the promotion.

Most of WWE’s history has come under the leadership of Vince McMahon. From the 1000-day reign of Hulk Hogan to the 1000-day reign of Roman Reigns, from the downfall of WCW to the arrival of AEW, Vince McMahon has seen it all up from the top of the chair of WWE.

Linda McMahon

Linda Marie Edwards was born on October 4, 1948. Unlike her husband and children, Linda McMahon has not played much role on-screen in WWE and has only made a few appearances in the promotion. She is mostly an American political executive and business executive.

McMahon has always helped his husband in expanding WWE. She founded WWE’s parent company Titan Sports alongside his husband in 1980. McMahon also served as the President and CEO of WWE in the 1990s.

Shane McMahon

Shane McMahon is the older of the two children of Vince and Linda McMahon. Born on January 15, 1970, Shane McMahon began working with WWE at the age of 15 where he did jobs such as working in the warehouse before filling in duties such as referee, producer, announcer, and finally a wrestler.

Shane is, no doubt, the best wrestler to be born in the McMahon family. His wrestling skills are praised all around the world and his ability to take jumps from anywhere is simply breathtaking. Shane McMahon left WWE in 2010 before joining back in 2016. He now makes occasional appearances on WWE programming, as a manager and as a wrestler.

Stephanie McMahon

Stephanie McMahon is the daughter of Vince and Linda McMahon. Born on September 24, 1976, Stephanie is considered to be the heir of Vince McMahon by many. She began working with the promotion in 1998 and performed various duties like in-ring wrestler, manager, general manager, CEO, Chairwoman, and much more before retiring in 2023.

She is married to Triple H and the couple has three daughters - Aurora Rose (born 2006), Murphy Claire (born 2008), and Vaughn Evelyn (born 2010).

Triple H

Triple H is not someone born into McMahon's family but he still exercises almost equal power. Born on July 27, 1969, Triple H is the current COO of WWE. He married Stephanie McMahon in 2003 and since then is a member of the McMahon family.

Triple H is praised for his leadership qualities and creative ideas. He was at the helm of the development of NXT which was considered to be one of the best wrestling brands in the late 2010s. He was named WWE Head of Creative in July 2022 and since then, has mostly been the man behind the narrative.
