Kenneth Crawford was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 31, 1990. He was raised in a military family and moved around until settling in Charlotte, North Carolina. He developed his love for wrestling there and began training at the Carolina Wrestling Academy under the supervision of Cedric Alexander.

In 2014, Ford made his professional wrestling debut as Kenneth Crawford. He began his career competing in independent wrestling promotions such as Premiere Wrestling Xperience and Absolute Intense Wrestling. He signed a developmental contract with WWE in 2015 and was assigned to the company's developmental division, NXT.

Crawford took up the ring moniker Montez Ford in NXT and formed ‘The Street Profits’ with Angelo Dawkins. The tandem failed to gain traction in the tag team division at first, suffering a streak of losses. They ultimately found their stride, which led to them winning the NXT Tag Team Titles in 2019.

Following a legendary and charismatic run with the twin titles, the Street Profits were promoted to the main roster in 2019.
