The Laver Cup is an international annual men’s tennis tournament that is held in various cities with its location rotating. The tournament is played out on indoor hard courts. As of now, the tournament is not included in the ATP World Tour and does not count towards the players points total.
However it does guarantee a participation fee based on the ATP stipulations alongside the prize money. The Laver Cup usually happens two weeks after the completion of the U.S. Open.
The Laver Cup started in 2017, with Roger Federer and his company TEAM8, Brazilian former Davis Cup player Jorge Paulo Lemann and Tennis Australia being the masterminds behind the project.
Laver Cup Teams
The Laver Cup is played out between two teams - Team Europe and Team World. Team Europe consists of the top six tennis players from Europe while Team World consists of the top six players from the non European countries in the world.
Both singles and doubles matches are played out through the course of the tournament. Team Europe is captained by Bjorn Borg while the skipper of the Team World is John McEnroe.
Only the second edition of the Laver Cup, the 2018 edition will be played from 21st September to 23rd September.
Venue
The Laver Cup has a rotating policy for it's venue. The first edition was held at the O2 Arena in Prague.
The 2019 Laver Cup will be held at the Palexpo in Geneva, Switzerland.
Prize Money
In addition to the participation fee based on the player's ATP rankings, each member of the winning team also gets a prize money of $250,000.
Players to Watch Out For
The Team World featured a comparatively weaker side in the last edition. However, this year the team has been strengthened by the inclusion of top 10 players like Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, Kevin Anderson of South Africa and John Isner of the United States.
Team Europe on the other hand have confirmed the presence of seasoned veterans Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
