About Laver Cup 2023

Laver Cup 2023

The Laver Cup is an international men's team tennis championship played on indoor hard courts between Team Europe and Team World. Since 2017, the tournament has been hosted annually.

The event typically takes place two weeks after the US Open, and the venue changes each year between cities in Europe and other parts of the world.

Each member of the winning team receives $250,000 in prize money in addition to the guaranteed participation fees, which are determined by the players' ATP rankings. However, the competition itself does not count towards each player's ATP Tour point totals for that year.

The Laver Cup received official ATP Tour approval in May 2019. The Laver Cup tournament matches are different from regular 3-set matches played on the ATP Tour in that if the match is tied at one set all, a 10-point "match tiebreak" is played instead of the deciding final set.

The sixth iteration of the Laver Cup in 2023 will take place from September 22 through September 24, 2023, on a hard indoor court at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada. After taking home the Laver Cup for the first time, Team World will try to defend their championship.

The event's co-founder, Roger Federer, will be in Vancouver for the entire run of the Laver Cup and will be welcomed onto the black court on Friday, September 22, during the evening session, in celebration of the passing of a year since his final professional match.

Laver Cup 2023: Team Europe and Team World Players

In the Laver Cup 2023, two teams, Team Europe and Team World, will compete for tennis supremacy. Team Europe is led by the seasoned Björn Borg as captain and supported by vice captain Thomas Enqvist.

The rest of the team includes Russia's Andrey Rublev, Norway's Casper Ruud, Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, France's Gael Monfils, Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and France's Arthur Fils.

Team World is led by Captain John McEnroe from the United States and Vice Captain Patrick McEnroe. The rest of the team includes Taylor Fritz of the United States, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton of the United States, and Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo.

Christopher Eubanks of the United States and Milos Raonic of Canada have recently joined Team World as alternates.

Laver Cup: Format

Six European players compete against six players from the rest of the world in this competition. A tennis icon serves as the team captain for each team.

Nine singles matches and three doubles matches are played over the course of three days. Each match win is worth one point on Day 1, two points on Day 2, and three points on Day 3. The tournament winner is the first team to accumulate 13 points, so the winning team can only be determined on day three.

A player can play singles no more than two times. At least four of the team's six players compete in doubles matches. All matches begin with two sets, and if the score is tied after one set, a 10-point "match tiebreak" is played.

On day 3, a fifth match known as "The Decider" is played if both sides are tied with 12 points. In this match, one set is played like a regular set with scoring and a tiebreak.

An exhibition game is played after the trophy ceremony if only one match must be played on Sunday. The Laver Cup in 2021 was the last event that required an exhibition match.

Laver Cup: History

The tournament is named after legendary Australian tennis player Rod Laver. Laver won 11 major singles titles in his career, including winning all four majors in the same year.

The Laver Cup was created in collaboration with TEAM8, a company co-founded by Roger Federer. The Ryder Cup in golf, which pits the top golfers from the United States and Europe against one another every two years, served as the inspiration for Roger Federer's creation of a team tennis event.

The Laver Cup, on the other hand, stands out since it is solely an invitational competition based on prior historical performances. The choice of the players competing is not made automatically based on the top-ranked athletes in the most current ATP Tour world rankings.

It was announced that the first three editions would feature former rivals John McEnroe of the United States and Björn Borg of Sweden leading Team World and Team Europe, respectively. They declared that they would return as team captains for a fourth consecutive competition after the 2019 tournament.
