How did Dustin Poirier get his nickname?
Dustin Poirier

The current No.4 ranked lightweight contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Dustin Poirier is undoubtedly one of the most prominent showmen inside the cage. Surviving in one of the most glamorous divisions of the promotion is hard, staying in the top 5 of the same division is beyond explanation. However, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier has been successful in doing both. It is not that the lightweight has never lost his game like the elite of elites does, but the 35-year-old fighter still promises to bring out war inside the cage ever since his Octagon debut. Hence, with a name like Dustin Poirier on the cards, no mixed martial arts fan is missing out on that event voluntarily.

Starting his professional career in 2009, Dustin Poirier currently boasts a record of 30 wins 8 losses and 1 draw in mixed martial arts. And over the years, Poirier has done some insane stunts inside the octagon like TKO’ing Conor McGregor twice, trying a rear naked choke on the Russian MMA legend Khabib Nurmagomedov, submitting Michael Chandler after making him bleed for at least two rounds, etc. Hence, Poirier has shared octagon with some of the most prominent names to ever compete in the sport. Moreover, he had a unanimous decision win against the current UFC BMF champion, Max Holloway, and became the interim lightweight champion, back in 2019. However, he could not unify the title against the reigning champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 236.

Dustin Poirier previously fought Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299. The bout took place on March 9, 2024, and Porier knocked out Saint-Denis during the last seconds of the second round. He earned a ‘Fight of the Night’ bonus for his showcase and got praised for his stunner, even from the reigning champion Islam Makhachev.

Hence, Poirier is currently booked to face Islam Makhachev on June 1, 2024, at UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier, at the Prudential Center in Newark, United States. Therefore the MMA pundits around the globe claim that it will be Poirier’s last chance at the lightweight championship before retiring. Win or lose, fans are eagerly waiting for his next showdown in a title fight.

Dustin Poirier, who goes by his monicker ‘The Diamond’ got his nickname during his amateur career. However, the 35-year-old fighter seems to live up to the name in every sense. Some claim that he is called ‘The Diamond’ as he takes in adversities from his opponents and outrights them just like the stone. And some Pundits assert that he got his name as he survived through a harsh upbringing and he is engaged in upbringing the people around him. Hence, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier stands by his name in every sense.

Dustin Poirier Title Bouts

Dustin Poirier has had few shots at the championship level. His first title bout was against Max Holloway for the interim lightweight championship of the UFC, which he won via a unanimous decision. However, the unification bout did not favor ‘The Diamond’ against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Hence lost his first chance of becoming the champion of the division.

Again with a three-fight win streak, Poirier went up against the former UFC lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira at UFC 269. Nevertheless, Poirier got submitted via a rear naked choke by Oliveira within the first minute into the third round.

On July 29, 2023, Dustin Poirier faced Justin Gaethje for the vacant BMF title at UFC 291. However, Poirier got knocked out with a head kick at 1:00 in the second round.
