Derrick Lewis, nicknamed ‘The Black Beast,’ is a heavyweight competitor in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). Holding a professional MMA record of 27 victories, 12 losses, and 1 no-contest, Lewis holds the record for the most knockout victories in the UFC, with 14 wins coming via KO/TKO stoppages.
Born on 7th Feb 1985 and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lewis often found himself in street altercations. In an episode of JRE with UFC commentator and media personality Joe Rogan, Lewis stated that things got worse when a street fight got him a prison sentence. Lewis revealed that he was sentenced to a five-year prison stint, but he got parole and ended up doing three and a half years. He states that his experience in jail motivated him and, in a way, laid the foundations for his career in MMA.
Lewis started his combat sports journey by training in boxing under the guidance of legendary boxer George Foreman. He was introduced to mixed martial arts by a friend and had a 4-1 amateur record. In 2010, he was signed by Bellator and later won his first world heavyweight championship belt at Legacy FC. After achieving a 6-0 record in that promotion, he was approached and signed by the UFC. Currently, Lewis holds the #12 spot in the UFC heavyweight rankings and is one of the division's biggest attractions.
