Khamzat Chimaev started his combat sports career as a freestyle wrestler and has won national championships for Russia and Sweden. Only seven years before did he start transitioning into mixed martial arts; he made his professional MMA debut in 2018 at International Ring Fight Arena and secured a second-round TKO win over his opponent back then to launch his professional career with a win. The other promotions Chimaev competed in before signing up with the Ultimate Fighting Championship were Fight Club Rush and Brave CF.

Khamzat Chimaev made his octagon debut on July 16, 2020, with an undefeated six-fight win streak at UFC on ESPN: Kattar vs. Ige. He had a second-round submission win over the UFC veteran John Phillips in Abu Dhabi. Chimaev also earned a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for his win against Phillips. For his last outing, Chimaev had a first-round submission win over Kevin Holland at UFC 279 on September 10, 2022. Moving on after a year of inactivity inside the cage, the 30-year-old Russian fighter is set to make his octagon return at UFC 308 on October 26, 2024, against the former UFC champion and the current No. 3 ranked welterweight contender Robert Whittaker in the co-main event.
