Yair Rodriguez began learning taekwondo at the age of 5 and started his journey in combat sports. He eventually began practicing MMA and faced Jonatan Guzman in his 2011 professional debut at FMP 8. He won the fight via unanimous decision and started his career with a victory.

Rodriguez began competing on The Ultimate Fighter Latin America as a featherweight for Team Velasquez. As evident of his dominance, he defeated Rodolfo Rubio in the semi-finals by first-round verbal submission and Humberto Brown in the quarterfinals via second-round triangle choke submission to move forward in his professional career as a mixed martial artist. He made his promotional debut in the UFC in 2014.

Rodriguez displayed his technical prowess by avoiding a standing guillotine attempt while still underground and pounding.

In the fifth round, Rodriguez delivered a powerful elbow that cut Holloway. Despite this, Holloway outpunched Yair in the competition, which was decided by the judges' scores. A unanimous verdict defeated Yair Rodriguez.

Yair Rodriguez locked horns with Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 290 for the undisputed featherweight title. Volkanovski outclassed Rodriguez via third-round TKO and delivered him the fourth loss of his career.

Yair Rodriguez and Brian Ortega faced each other at UFC Fight Night: Moreno vs. Royval 2 on February 24, 2024. Ortega defeated him via a thrid-round technical submission to win and handed Rodriguez his fourth loss.
