About Ambipom

As a generation four Pokemon, Ambipom first appeared in the Diamond and Pearl season of the anime with the episode Journey to the Unown!. In this episode, the Aipom that Ash traded to Dawn evolves into Ambipom. Ambipom will evolve from Aipom when Aipom is leveled up while it knows the move Double Hit. There is no level threshold required for this evolution, although Aipom will learn Double Hit naturally upon reaching level 32. The Pokedex states that Ambipom is so capable with its two large hand-like tails that it rarely has use for its actual hands.

Appearance

Ambipom is a purple and yellow Pokemon that resembles a monkey. Most of its body is purple, but its face, stomach, and the ends of its large tails are yellow and red. Ambipom’s tails are connected from a long slender tail and they end with large three pronged “hands”. It can be commonly seen grinning with its wide smile and it has a little pointed chevron for a nose. Ambipom is an average sized Pokemon at 3 feet and 11 inches, or 1.2 meters, tall.

Behavior

Ambipom is an incredibly agile Pokemon as it is known to be able to leap from branch to branch with lightning speed in search of food. Ambipom’s large tails can be used to crack open nuts and it will often walk on its tail rather than its feet. In fact, it hardly ever uses its actual hands and prefers to use its tails for most things. They are known to get into territorial disputes with Passimian. The Pokedex mentions that Ambipom is a social Pokemon and they will link their tails together in a sign of friendship.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Ambipom has a good lineup of offensive stats with a high physical attack and a good speed to make it threatening. While its resistances are not too powerful, Ambipom can function as a strong aggressive Pokemon. It can also have Technician or Skill Link as its abilities to make Ambipom more threatening in battle. As a monotype normal Pokemon, Ambipom takes 2x damage from fighting type moves. It is immune to ghost type moves but has no other resistances to any other type of move.

Best Moveset

When Ambipom was first released, it enjoyed being a middle tier Pokemon in competitive battle but it has fallen close to the bottom since. However, it can still be utilized as an aggressive Pokemon. Skill Link with multi-hit moves or Technician with low base moves can be a good way to lead a battle. While Technician Ambipom is not likely to knock out your opponent’s Pokemon in one hit, the damage it deals can be significant. Consider running Fake Out, Taunt, Low Kick/Pursuit, and U-Turn/Return. This set is aimed at making Ambipom a good lead Pokemon. It can flinch a priority target, Taunt a disruptive Pokemon, chase after Pokemon or cover more types, and pivot or deal solid damage. There are many aggressive options that Ambipom can offer to a team.

How to Catch Ambipom in Pokemon Go?

If you would like to obtain an Ambipom in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to first obtain an Aipom to eventually evolve it. Like most final evolutions, the base evolution is a more common spawn to encounter in the wild. You can find Aipom spawning in the wild, at a boosted rate, near residential areas, universities, college campuses, and parking lots. Aipom can also be hatched from 2 and 5 km eggs but while Ambipom has not been featured as a raid boss, you can find Aipom as a tier two raid boss at Pokemon Gyms. Aipom requires 100 candies as well as a Sinnoh Stone in order to evolve into Ambipom.

Trivia

  1. While Ambipom could learn Dual Chop naturally since generation seven, it cannot learn it from Move Tutors in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
  2. The inspiration for Ambipom’s design seems to be based on a New World Monkey.
  3. The name Ambipom is a combination of the prefix ambi- (Latin for both), and a corruption of palm.

FAQ

Is Ambipom bad?

Ambipom eventually became a worse offensive option as newer Pokemon were released. However, it can still function as an aggressive Pokemon. Many Pokemon prefer to wait and scale, while Ambipom can be a threat as soon as it enters battle. It is not the worst Pokemon by any means.

Is Ambipom a monkey?

It is likely that Ambipom’s design is based on the New World monkey due to its exaggerated prehensile tail. Both Pokemon are known to use their tails a lot, but the effect is emphasized in the fantasy world of Pokemon. Many Pokemon designs are inspired by real life connections which can make the franchise charming.

What number is Ambipom?

Ambipom is the 424th Pokemon in the Pokedex. The Pokedex will label every Pokemon with a number typically sequentially with its evolutions. However, Pokemon that were released in a prior generation will gain priority over sequential order with evolutions. Therefore, you can use this number to remind yourself which generation a Pokemon was released in.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Long Tail Pokemon”. While Ambipom’s impact on competitive play was somewhat short-lived, it is still unique as a Pokemon that gave an evolution to an evolution line that needed it. While its statlines have grown to seem weak over time, it can still be a powerful offensive Pokemon. Reserve a slot on your team for Ambipom if you want an aggressive normal type Pokemon.
