Appearance

Baltoy is a small brown Pokemon that resembles a clay figurine. Most of its body is brown but it has red trimmings on its stomach and along its eyes. It has a pointed head, two slender arms, and no visible legs. Baltoy is typically seen floating around instead of standing on two legs. At its base is a pointed diamond where it can balance itself in order to sleep. Its eyes always appear to be closed. Baltoy is a small Pokemon at only 1 foot and 8 inches, or 0.5 meters, tall.

Behavior

Baltoy is likely an ancient Pokemon as evidence of its existence was found in ancient ruins. Primitive paintings depict Baltoy living with ancient civilizations in the Pokemon universe. While it is capable of levitation, it will stand on its one spike when it is preparing to sleep. They appear to be social Pokemon as Baltoy will begin crying with each other in unison when found in groups. In the anime, Baltoy is seen predicting the future as well as providing an essential role during archaeology expeditions.

Strengths and Weaknesses

As the base evolution Pokemon of its evolution line, there are not many strengths regarding Baltoy. Its stats are mostly balanced with spikes towards its defensive stats but its speed is still slower than other Pokemon at this point of the game. Baltoy is typically considered a supportive defensive Pokemon and does not pose much of an aggressive threat. As a dual type ground and psychic Pokemon, Baltoy takes 2x damage from bug, ghost, water, grass, ice and dark type moves. It is immune to electric and ground type moves, and is resistant to fighting, poison, rock, and psychic type moves.

Best Moveset

In competitive play, Baltoy is typically reserved for the LC (Little Cup) bracket. In this format, it can provide a supportive role while also surviving more than one attack. With the Levitate ability it has more resilience but its defensive typing is still weak overall. You will want an Eviolite held item or a Berry Juice to ensure that Baltoy can use its important moves. Consider running Rapid Spin, Stealth Rock, Earthquake, and Psychic/Recycle. Baltoy can set up hazards and remove hazards on your side of the field. The rest of its moveset is meant to ensure that Baltoy has something to do after the hazards have been set up or cleared. Recycle should only be considered if you are using a Berry Juice held item instead of an Eviolite.

How to Catch Baltoy in Pokemon Go?

If you would like to obtain a Baltoy in Pokemon Go, there are many different ways of doing so. As a base evolution Pokemon, it is much more common to encounter than its evolved form. You can find it in the wild, at a boosted rate, near hospitals, hiking trails, parks, quarries, parking lots, and residential areas at night time. Baltoy can also be hatched from 2 and 5 km eggs. Both Baltoy and Claydol have been featured as tier one and tier three raid bosses respectively at Pokemon Gyms. To evolve Baltoy into Claydol it will require 50 candies.

Trivia

  1. No other Pokemon in the franchise have the same type combination as Baltoy and its evolution Claydol.
  2. The inspiration for Baltoy’s design is likely based on a shakoki-dogu, a spaceman clay figurine.
  3. The name Baltoy is a combination of the words balance and toy.

FAQ

Is Baltoy a good Pokemon?

While Baltoy has the makings of a supportive defensive Pokemon, it suffers from weak defensive typing. A lot of types can handle Baltoy quickly and with ease. It is rare to see a base evolution Pokemon with access to supportive moves like Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock so there is still a niche for Baltoy to fill.

Is Baltoy a Legendary Pokemon?

To be considered a legendary Pokemon, it must fulfill a few conditions. Typically, legendary Pokemon can only be encountered once per save file, cannot evolve, and cannot be bred at a Pokemon Daycare. Since Baltoy does not fulfill any of these conditions, it is not a legendary Pokemon.

How does Baltoy evolve in Sword and Shield?

The condition to evolve Baltoy does not change between games. You will just need to have Baltoy reach level 36 and it will evolve naturally. There is no other special condition to fulfill other than reaching the level threshold. Once Baltoy evolves into Claydol, you have finished this Pokemon’s evolution line and can move on to collecting other Pokemon.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Clay Doll Pokemon”. While Claydol’s impact on competitive play is limited to a unique format, it is a remarkable Pokemon. Thanks to its access to supportive moves, Baltoy can be useful in many different battles. Even with many weaknesses, Baltoy can help the rest of your team perform well. Reserve a slot on your team for Baltoy if you want a supportive ground and psychic type Pokemon.
