The manta ray that soars over the ocean, Mantine is known as the Kite pokemon, able to gracefully glide across both the seas and the skies, using its powerful fins to create enough momentum to take flight and casually glide through the air! It constantly has other Pokemon like Remoraid attached to its underbelly to hitch a ride or to passively feed, but never seems to mind their presence. It is the final evolution of the Mantyke line, achievable when it is leveled up with a Remoraid within your active party!

About Mantine

Mantine was first introduced in Generation 2 in the Gold/Silver games and made its anime debut in the 3rd Pokemon Movie Spell of the Unown: Entei. It would shortly be seen after in the main series episode “Mantine Overboard!”. Appearance

Mantine resembles a manta ray with its dark blue broad fins, gray underbelly, twin antennae, and long streamer-like tail. It has two sets of gills on its underside as well as small, beady eyes and a small mouth. It is very often seen with Remoraids attached to its underbelly, as they feed off of Mantine and the various scuttle their sea diving picks up on their skin. Mantine are *very* large seaborne creatures, averaging nearly 7 feet and over 485 pounds according to its Pokedex entries.

Behavior

Mantine are typically friendly, docile creatures and this is evidenced by their relative indifference when other pokemon, typically Remoraids, latch onto their underbellies. In some regions like Alola, Mantine have even been domesticated in order to transfer people across islands, and can be seen being ridden by children and surfers alike.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Mantine has a considerable amount of special defense, making it a potent wall against special attackers. With the ability to learn moves like Roost and Scald, it is very much able to cripple and stall out opposing teams unable to get around its defenses.

While Mantine boasts against many resistances in Fire, Water, Bug, Fighting, and Steel type moves, it is weak to both Rock and especially Electric moves with a 4x weakness. It also has rather pedestrian defense stats, making it vulnerable to physical attackers.

Best Moveset

In order to optimize its best traits, Mantine is most effective using debilitating attack moves like Scald or Airslash in tandem with recovery moves, enabling it to replenish its health after shrugging off attacks while crippling the enemy’s offensive. You can also use moves like Defog to clear the field of potential hazards for your other pokemon.

FAQs

Can Mantine actually fly?

One could argue that Mantine’s flight could be defined as a form of gliding, being conditional on building up enough speed beforehand, It is still impressive for sea borne creature of its size to keep itself airborne for an extended period of time.

What are the best natures for Mantine?

Ideally Mantine wants a nature that further boosts its sizable special defenses. Calm is typically the best choice for this, although Gentle is another potential alternative.

What is Mantine weak to?

Electric type attacks are absolutely devastating to Mantine since it hits for super effective damage on both types. It doesn’t matter if its a physical or special attacker it will most likely take out Mantine in one hit, especially if its a STAB move. Being somewhat flimsy on the defensive side makes it vulnerable to Rock types as well.

Conclusion

Mantine is a very durable Pokemon able to wear down teams that are not well prepared for its skillset, while also bringing a solid amount of utility to the table. Special sweepers wll be frustrated against its monstrous stats and recovery. There is some finesse involved in avoiding the major pitfalls and weaknesses of Mantine in its glaring 4x weakness to electricity and the common usage of Stealth Rocks, but these can be solved either in moveset/itemization choices or general teambuilding. Mantine is definitely worth the spot on a team in the right hands!
