Mareanie is a Poison/Water Pokemon introduced along with the Alola Region (Generation VII) and it is the base form of Toxapex. The spikes on this Pokemon are extremely poisonous so don’t even think of petting it unless you have an infinite source of antidotes.

Appearance

Mareanie is based on a crown-of-thorns starfish, a type of venomous starfish. On top of its head are hair-like tentacles which make the top part of the starfish and these tentacles are covered with Poison. These tentacles are blue and the thorns are purple while on top of its head is a singular yellow thorn and purple around it. Its entire body is purple, resembling poison, but its eyes are yellow with blue iris and yellow pupils. Its mouth is right below its eyes and has two teeth sticking out of it. The rest of the body looks like gooey poison but also resembles a dress.

Behavior

With each and every thorn on its tentacles covered in poison, Mareanie plunges these spikes into the enemy. Upon doing so, this Pokemon waits for its prey to be weakened to finish the blow within ten seconds. This Pokemon’s favourite meal is the coral that grows on Corsola’s head. This, however, is known only by the Alolan Maeanie so far because the Galarian ones have not yet discovered it. The only way to defeat a Mareanie is by striking on its head because the rest of the body parts can quickly regenerate even if they are cut off. If you ever get stung by a Mareanie, don’t forget to spray antidotes, else you’ll be clawing your skin out from itchiness.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Mareanie is a dual Water and Poison type Pokemon and is thus weak to Ground, Psychic and Electric type moves. However, while it has no immunities, it is resistant to Fighting, Poison, Bug, Steel, Fire, Water, Fairy and Ice type moves.

Best moveset

Mareanie is an incredible tank which can dominate LC without a doubt. With good HP, defense and special defense along with access to regenerate, this Pokemon can set up toxic spikes as well as damage the enemy Pokemon with ease.

Toxic Spikes is an incredibly effective move because with 2 stacks of it, you can badly poison the opponent as long as they step on it. Although this Pokemon has low Special Attack, it can still benefit from Venoshock as any Pokemon that is affected by poison upon switching in will take twice as much damage from this move. To force the opponent to switch in with a different Pokemon, one must first deal massive damage to them. Hydro Pump is the perfect solution for this as it can deal enough damage to eventually knock out the opponent. Recover will be incredibly handy as this Pokemon is tanky and after taking a few hits, it can just get its health back.

How to catch Mareaine in Pokemon Go?

This Pokemon is not yet available in the game.

Trivia

  1. Just like crown-of-thorns starfish which prey on corals, Mareanie preys on Corsola in the games since they are the equivalent of both in the game.
  2. If a wild Corsola and a wild Mareaine were to appear, instead of attacking the player, the Mareaine would attack the Corsola.
  3. Mareaine can regenerate its body parts with sleep. This is also foreshadowed in its ability, regenerate which heals the Pokemon upon switching out.

Conclusion

Mareanie, while not being the strongest in its base form, grows into incredible Pokemon upon evolution. With tentacles that can poison you until you can't make another move, Mareanie are a force that is not to be toyed around with. Making a meal out of Corsola’s branches, this Pokemon can be the nightmare of craftsmen who work with these branches. In battle, Mareanie might not be as strong, however can still hold on its own in LC. Upon evolution, however, this Pokemon turns into a beast which still dominates the meta of OU.
