Appearance of Onix

Onix is a massive grey rock creature. It has the shape of a snake, with a long body that stands nearly 29 feet off the ground. Onix is made up of several rock chains that go the length of its body. It has a rocky spine on top of its head. As Onix ages, it grows smoother and smoother. Its head contains a magnet that works as a sort of compass for Onix. This guides Onix while it is digging through the ground.

Behavior of Onix

Onix digs quite a bit. This digging causes tremors and loud sounds. The holes left by Onix are used for homes by Diglett. Onix is capable of rotating any part of its body 360 degrees. Onix is aggressive and will attack other Pokemon if it senses they are hurt or weak. Onix will even attack humans, too. It lives in mountains and caves and can live to be 100 years old, making it one of the older Pokemon.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Onix is strong against Electric, Poison, Normal, Flying, Fire, and Rock-type Pokemon. Onix receives no damage from Electric types and half the damage from Normal, Flying, Fire, and Rock types. Onix is also strong attacking Steel types. Poison types can do a quarter of the damage to Onix. Onix is weak against Water, Grass, Fighting, Ice, Ground, and Steel types. Water and Grass types do four times as much damage to Onix and Fighting, Ice and Ground types do twice as much.

Shiny Onix

The Shiny Onix differs mainly in color from the original. Shiny Onix, rather than being grey, is a light brownish, almost green hue. Shiny Onix maintains the spike on the top of its head and the other notable features of Onix. Shiny Onix is a rare Pokemon.

Crystal Onix

The Crystal Onix is a version of Onix that, instead of rock, is made out of a glass crystal. The Crystal Onix appeared in the anime of the same name. A sculptor’s sister wanted to find the Crystal Onix to inspire her brother to make Pokemon figurines. Unlike the regular Onix, the Crystal Onix can live in water without being hurt by it. Its glass skin makes it resistant to Water types.

How to catch Onix in Pokemon Go?

Onix can be found in Farmland, Cities, Golf Courses, and other areas like this. Mountains are good for Onix, since it lives there, as well as other rocky areas. Onix can also be hatched from 5k eggs, so hatching it isn’t too tall a task. It evolves to Steelix at 50 candies and with a Metal Coat. When evolved, Steelix becomes a Steel, Ground dual type, rather than the Ground, Rock dual-type Onix is.

Trivia

  1. Onix is the only Pokemon that participates in the Pokemon World Tournament without being evolved, highlighting the power of this Pokemon. It is used in all of Brock’s Teams.
  2. Of all unevolved Pokemon, Onix has the highest base defense stat, and is both the heaviest and tallest.
  3. Onix is the only Gigantic Pokemon that is able to evolve.
  4. Onix is the only Pokemon with multi-stage evolution that can be achieved entirely through trade. This is done in Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver by trading Bellsprout for Onix in Violet City and then anyone for Steelix in Olivine City.

FAQs

Q. What type is Crystal Onix?

Onix is a dual-type Ground and Rock Pokemon, but the rare Crystal Onix is actually a Crystal type. It can evolve into Crystal Steelix when holding a Metal Coat, but only at night.

Q. Is Onix a good Pokemon?

Much like Lickitung, Onix was designed originally to have no evolutions, so its base stats are on par with evolved Pokemon. This provides an advantage because at its unevolved base, it is equally as good as many evolved Pokemon, so when it evolves it becomes even better. The stats for Steelix are better than a lot of Pokemon.

Q. Is Geodude or Onix better?

Debatable, but it leans towards Geodude. Onix has a great advantage in defense, but Geodude also has good defense on its own. Geodude has more health, attack and special defense. Geodude also has arguably better moves than Onix does.

Q. When should I evolve Onix?

Given that Onix has no level requirement to evolve, players can do this at any time. It is recommended to do it as early as possible because the only move that Steelix will not learn is Sand Tomb, which isn’t that helpful. Waiting till level 46 will avoid that if that move is something desirable.

Conclusion

Onix is a strong, aggressive and mean Pokemon. Its base stats make it one of the best-unevolved Pokemon out there, so getting one can be really beneficial. Onix also has a rare Crystal countertype that is unique and has different abilities and types. Crystal Onix is as strong as Onix, but with different types and movesets, so finding one, while incredibly rare, is a great accomplishment.
