Appearance

Stoutland is a large black and cream colored Pokemon that resembles a St. Bernard and a Maltese dog. Most of its fur is black, but the fur around its head is brown and its long whisker-like fur is cream colored. It also has a triple pointed tuft of fur on its face resembling aged eyebrows. While they are not always visible, Stoutland has four legs to run on. There is a small tuft of fur at its base for Stoutland’s tail. Stoutland is an average sized Pokemon at 3 feet and 11 inches, or 1.2 meters, tall.

Behavior

Stoutland have good wholesome qualities that make them a perfect partner. They are intelligent, brave, trustworthy, and noble Pokemon. Because of their many positive qualities, Stoutland is often used for emergency rescue or dangerous travel through mountains. Their long fur can help keep a trainer warm while traversing through wintery peaks. Due to its long fur, Stoutland can have trouble with overheating in regions like Alola. The Pokedex mentions Stoutland’s proficiency for mountainous environments and even their potential for rescuing people at sea.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Stoutland has a good mix of offensive and defensive stats as while its special attack stat is low, its physical attack is high and it has a decent speed to keep it threatening. It also has a good lineup of resilience with high defensive stats and a good health pool. Even though Stoutland is not ranked very highly it can be a formidable Pokemon. As a monotype normal Pokemon, Stoutland takes 2x damage from fighting type moves. It is immune to ghost type moves but has no resistances to any other type in the franchise.

Best Moveset

While Stoutland has an excellent statline, it simply falls a little short of optimized competitive play. Stoutland is ranked lowly in competitive tier lists and its lack of powerful ability and overall weak type makes it undesirable. Nevertheless, Stoutland can be the anchor your team needs to get an edge in battle. You will want to use Stoutland against slower Pokemon that do not try to scale their stats too high.

Stoutland can last in a prolonged battle if the opponent is not scaling their Pokemon’s stats. Consider running Return, Superpower, Pursuit, and Facade as this moveset is aimed at giving Stoutland the strongest moveset against slower Pokemon. Use Facade if they try to slow you down with status effects. Pursuit to catch them while they are switching out while the other two moves are Stoutland’s primary damage sources. Use a Choice Band, as a held item, to ensure the damage is significant.

How to Catch Stoutland in Pokemon Go?

If you would like to obtain a Stoutland in Pokemon Go, the easiest way to do so would be to first obtain a Lillipup and eventually evolve it into Stoutland. Like most fully evolved Pokemon, the base evolution spawns more commonly in the wild which makes it easier to encounter. You can find Lillipup spawning in the wild, at a boosted rate, near fields, roads, schools, universities, libraries, and other residential areas. Lillipup can also be hatched from 2 and 5 km eggs. Not only that, Lillipup, Herdier, and Stoutland have all been featured as tier one, tier three, and tier four raid bosses respectively at Pokemon Gyms. To evolve Lillipup into Herdier you will need 25 candies and you will need another 100 candies to evolve Herdier into Stoutland.

  2. The name Stoutland is a combination of the words stout and land (a reference to terriers)

FAQ

What happened to Stoutland in the anime?

There was an anime arc featuring a Stoutland and a Litten huddled together at an abandoned house. Stoutland was sick and needed treatment from Nurse Joy. It was featured in multiple episodes throughout the anime, but Stoutland appeared as an apparition to its Litten friend in the end.

How big is a Stoutland?

While Stoutland has a bulky frame and seems large, it is only 3 feet and 11 inches, or 1.2 meters, tall. It is quite large for a dog, but it can seem to be massive in the anime or in the player's minds. The massive fur surrounding Stoutland also supports the illusion of its size.

Is Stoutland good?

Stoutland has a decent lineup of base stats, but it is held back from offensive roles. It does not have easy access to scaling stats and its speed stat is too slow to compete against aggressive Pokemon. However, it is not a weak Pokemon. It has high resistances, potential damage, and a good health pool. It will likely survive longer than opponents expect.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this “Big-Hearted Pokemon”. While Stoutland has not made a large impact on competitive play, it can still be a powerful Pokemon. If a player does not have too many aggressive Pokemon, they may not be prepared to deal with Stoutland. It is capable of dealing considerable damage while surviving for longer than expected. Reserve a slot on your team for Stoutland if you want an all around normal type Pokemon.
