What is Polynesian Tattoo

Polynesia, consisting of islands situated within a triangular region bordered by Hawai'i, New Zealand, and Rapa Nui (Easter Island). In the olden days, people could tell where a Polynesian was from by looking at their tattoos because each island had its own special designs. Polynesian tattoos showed how they used their environment practically. Their languages had lots of words for stars, currents, winds, landforms, and directions, showing how they paid attention to nature. Tattoos were like badges for them, a way to express themselves. Polynesians put these designs on their faces and bodies, like a unique form of ID. Each Polynesian culture had its own ways of tattooing and different patterns.

Tā moko is the traditional way the Māori, the original people of New Zealand, permanently mark their bodies, similar to a tattoo. It's one of the famous five main types of Polynesian tattoos, alongside the other four styles: Marquesan, Samoan, Tahitian, and Hawaiian. Those who practiced tā moko, known as tohunga-tā-moko, were seen as sacred and untouchable.

History of Polynesian Tattoo

Polynesian tattoos have a rich history stretching back more than 2,000 years. The people who sport these tattoos come from diverse backgrounds, mirroring the diversity of the tattoos themselves. In the past, Polynesian tribes used tattoos as a prominent art form to showcase their individuality and heritage. Each tattoo design held deep cultural significance, with meanings linked to the community's traditions and beliefs. However, with the arrival of Western missionaries in the 19th century, this once-prevalent practice saw a decline across the Pacific Ocean region.

Tonga boasts some of the oldest Polynesian tattoos, reflecting its status as one of the earliest settled islands by the Austronesians. These tattoos feature distinctive geometric patterns, predominantly adorning warriors from the waist down to the knees with repeated motifs, bands, and solid black sections. Women also partake in this tradition, with more delicate floral designs on their hands and lower bodies. Only esteemed members of society, such as priests, are entrusted with the task of creating these tattoos, imbued with profound social, religious, and cultural significance.

When people first arrived in Samoa, not long after they settled in Tonga, they started making their own Polynesian tattoos. These tattoos were like the ones in Tonga, but they were a bit different too. What's interesting is that even when Christianity became the main religion in Samoa, they kept on doing their tattooing. But in other places like Tonga, they stopped tattooing until it became popular again in the 1960s.
