"The Canadian Bad Boy" started his wrestling on the free circuit in 2002 under his current ring name. He joined WWE in 2006, acting in formative regions of Florida Championship Wrestling (OVW) and Ohio Valley Wrestling (FCW). He likewise worked momentarily on the main roster of the ECW brand under the name Gavin Lances. After his exit from WWE in 2009, he got back to the autonomous promotions before rejoining WWE in 2013. He was named Tye Dillinger and acquired fame in NXT before promoting to the main roster of SmackDown in 2017. He performed there until his second exit in 2019.

Spears, "The Canadian Sensation" endorsed with AEW in 2019 with his current ring name. After his AEW contract expired in late 2023, Spears rejoined WWE's NXT brand in 2024 as Shawn Spears.
