IPL Points Table 2022

The Indian Premier League (IPL) will feature ten IPL teams for the first time after 2011. Following a similar format, each participating team will be playing a total of 14 matches - twice against five teams and once against four other teams. The top four teams on the IPL 2022 points table at the end of the league stage will qualify for the Playoffs stage.

IPL Points Table 2022 Rules

As mentioned earlier, the primary target of each and every team is to end up in one of the top four spots of the IPL points table. It is a secondary goal to be among the top two as those teams get an extra opportunity to be in the IPL Finals.

The IPL standings are decided on the number of points each team has. If more than one team is tied with the same number of points, the ‘Net Run Rate’ (NRR) is taken into consideration. The rules for gaining points in IPL points table 2022 are as follows:

  1. A team gets 2 points for a win.
  2. A team gets 1 point in case the game is abandoned or ends abruptly as No Result.
  3. A team gets 0 points in case of a loss.

The NRR of a team is extremely crucial as the IPL Standings get too close as the tournament progresses and often a few number of teams are tied on points. The NRR of a team is calculated as ‘the number of runs scored by the team to the number of overs faced’ to ‘the number of runs conceded by the team to the number of overs bowled’ in the same tournament.

IPL Standings Trivias

  1. No team has ever progressed to Playoffs with less than 12 points in the history of IPL.
  2. Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Deccan Chargers (now defunct) are the only 2 teams to have accumulated 4 points in an IPL Season which is the lowest points accumulated by any team.
  3. Kolkata Knight Riders and Deccan Chargers (now defunct) are the only teams which have never finished 1st in the Indian Premier League Points table but have gone on to win the tournament.
  4. Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) is the only team in IPL history to finish 1st in the IPL points table but never win the title. They have done it thrice.
  5. Two sets of three teams were tied on the same number of points in IPL 2020 (Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders were tied on 14 while Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were tied on 12 each).
  6. Four teams were tied on 14 points each in IPL 2010 - Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Kolkata Knight Riders.
  7. The highest NRR achieved by any team at the end of the league stage is +1.107 by the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020 while the lowest is -1.436 achieved by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in IPL 2015.
  8. The highest number of points achieved by a team in a particular IPL season is 22. It was achieved by Rajasthan Royals in 2008, Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2012, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in 2013 and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2014.

Note: The Points Table of IPL 2022 has not been considered for these trivia facts.

What does for/against score points in the IPL Points Table mean?

The ‘for’ stands for the cumulative runs scored and wickets lost by that particular team in the entire IPL season while the ‘against’ stands for the cumulative runs conceded and wickets taken by that particular team in the entire IPL season.

What is NRR in IPL Standings?

NRR stands for Net Run Rate. It is defined as the difference between the run rate achieved by the particular team in the IPL season and the run rate conceded. Higher the NRR, better for the team.

How to calculate the net run rate in the IPL Table?

As mentioned earlier, the NRR of a team is calculated as ‘the number of runs scored by the team to the number of overs faced’ to ‘the number of runs conceded by the team to the number of overs bowled’ in the same tournament.
