On April 29, 1999, SmackDown made its first run on the Television screen. However, back then, it used to air every Thursday night. In 2005, it was moved to Friday and that continued for the next ten years. In 2015, the show was moved back to Thursday night but WWE had big plans in store for their second most popular brand.

In 2016, SmackDown Live began to air on Tuesday nights thereby, coming close to WWE’s flagship show, Monday Night RAW. A sense of competition was introduced between the two top brands of the WWE network.

The biggest difference was that the show was now Live. The show travelled across seven countries and was broadcast from 163 arenas spread over 148 cities.

When the show had firs come into existence, it was widely known as The Rock’s show because the Samoan Superstar had declared the blue brand as his home. Interestingly, the name of the show ‘SmackDown’ was drawn from the Rock’s popular catchphrase “Layeth the smackdown”.

After WWE’s brand extension in 2002, SmackDown started competing against WWE RAW. However, in 2011, WWE decided to call off the division of its network in two brands and announced that the wrestlers will no longer remain exclusive to their respective brands.

On October 14 of the same year, SmackDown became the second longest running weekly television series in the history of American television. Three years later, SmackDown celebrated its fifteenth anniversary on the television and continued to enjoy success.

The Blue Brand achieved another milestone in their journey when the show was aired on the USA Network for the first time on January 7, 2016. This was also the first time when three WWE shows (others being RAW and Tough Enough) were airing on the same network.

In May 2016, SmackDown Live started airing on Tuesday nights. Two months later, Shane McMahon was appointed as the Commissioner of SmackDown Live followed by Daniel Bryan being appointed as the General Manager.

SmackDown has continued to feature some of the most incredible WWE Superstars in its entire course of history. Currently, AJ Styles is holding the WWE Championship whereas Charlotte Flair is the Women’s Champion.
