About Toray Pan Pacific Open

Toray Pan Pacific Open 2023 Introduction

A women's outdoor hardcourt tennis tournament, the Pan Pacific Open is now sponsored by Toray Industries. It takes place every year in Tokyo, Japan. It's a WTA 500-level event.


The 38th iteration of the event will run from September 25 to October 1, 2023, at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan. The Pan Pacific Open's total prize pool is US$780,637.


According to the WTA website, in the main draw of the Pan Pacific Open, there will be 28 singles players (TBD) and 16 doubles teams. Meanwhile, there will be 24 singles players in the qualification round.


At the Pan Pacific Open, singles matches are played in a best-of-three-sets format with a 7-point tiebreaker after six games in each set.


The format for doubles matches at the tournament is also best-of-three sets. with no advantage in the first two sets. In the event of a 6-game tie, a 7-point tiebreaker is used to break the tie. A 10-point match tiebreaker is used to determine the final set.


Toray Pan Pacific Open 2023 History

The Toray Sillook Championships was the name of the tournament when it debuted in 1973.


The tournament’s name has been changed numerous times, like Sillook Open Tokyo in 1976, TV Championships in 1982, and Queens Grand Prix in 1983.


It was given its current name, the Pan Pacific Open, in 1984 and was previously played at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on indoor carpet. The tournament was relocated to the Ariake Coliseum's outdoor hard courts in 2008.


In the years from 1993 through 2008, it was categorized as a Tier I tournament. After that, it was dropped to a Premier event starting with the 2014 edition, with the Wuhan Open in Wuhan, China, serving as a stand-in for it in the Premier category. Five-time singles champion Martina Hingis currently owns the record for the most titles.


Toray Pan Pacific Open 2023 Schedule

The Toray Pacific Open 2023 qualifications will take place on September 23 and 24, and the main draw will run from September 25 to October 1.


The singles final will take place on October 1, while the doubles finals will take place on September 30.


Toray Pan Pacific Open 2023 Venue

Ariake Coliseum will host the Toray Pan Pacific Open in 2023. Ariake Tennis Forest Park in Ariake, Kt., Tokyo, Japan, is an indoor sporting facility. One of the few professional tennis grounds with a retractable roof, it can hold up to 10,000 spectators.


For the Japan Open and the Pan Pacific Open, which are hosted in Ariake Tennis Forest Park, the arena serves as the center court. Tennis competitions for the 2020 Summer Olympics were also held there.

In 2022, Liudmila Samsonova defeated Zheng Qinwen 7-5, 7-5 in the final to win her third championship of the year. Giuliana Olmos and Gabriela Dabrowski won the doubles event, defeating Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
