Born in Ocotlan, Mexico, on November 18, 2001, Santiago De la Fuente is an amateur golfer. He learned to play golf from his father, Gerardo, when he was three years old.
He began participating in tournaments at the age of nine; until he was in his mid-teens, his father served as his only coach, and he bought his first full set of clubs after enrolling at the Colegio Espana High School.
After playing golf for two years at Arkansas Tech, De la Fuente was awarded a scholarship to pursue his education at the University of Houston. He also played at the Palmer Cup in 2023, and had a stellar collegiate golf career, winning 19 awards and achievements, including the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year title and All-America honors.
He won the 2024 Latin America Amateur Championship after scoring birdies on the final two holes. He overcame Omar Morales by a margin of two strokes. After this win, he qualified for his first-ever major tournament at the 2024 Masters; however, he missed the cut.
