Born on January 17, 1987, Oleksandr Oleksandrovych Usyk, a Ukrainian professional boxer, has enjoyed significant success in the boxing world. He has won multiple world championships in two weight categories, including the unified heavyweight title in 2021. He also holds the Ring magazine title since 2022 and the International Boxing Organization (IBO) title since 2021. Usyk’s popularity soared when he became the undisputed cruiserweight champion from 2018 to 2019, becoming the first boxer in that division to hold all four major world titles. Moreover, he is currently the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world defeating Tyson Fury in May 2024.

Usyk is widely regarded as one of Ukraine's greatest boxers in history. His victory over Anthony Joshua in 2021 earned him a place among an exclusive group of three boxers who have unified the cruiserweight world titles and then become world heavyweight champions alongside Evander Holyfield and David Haye.

Oleksandr Usyk has an undefeated boxing record and has never lost a professional boxing fight in his career (22-0).

However, Usyk has lost 15 times in his amateur career and has an amateur boxing record of 335 wins and 15 losses.

Oleksandr Usyk’s amateur career

In the 2006 European Championships, Oleksandr Usyk experienced a mixed run. He won his first three matches but was defeated in the semi-final by Matvey Korobov. Usyk transitioned to the light-heavyweight category and achieved success in the Strandja Cup in 2008.

In February 2008, Usyk moved up yet another weight division and took part in the qualifier for the Olympics in Roseto degli Abruzzi, replacing European Champion Denys Poyatsyka. There, he secured victories against tough opponents like Elchin Alizade and Daniel Price.

During the 2008 Olympic Games, Usyk displayed his skill by outpointing Yushan Nijiati with a score of 23-4 but faced a loss in the quarter-final to Clemente Russo with a score of 4-7.

After briefly dropping down to light-heavyweight and clinching a gold medal at the 2008 European Championships, Usyk returned to the heavyweight division. He continued his success by winning the heavyweight title at the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships, defeating fighters like Artur Beterbiev and Teymur Mammadov, which also secured his qualification for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Usyk reached the pinnacle of his amateur career by winning the gold medal. He outpointed Artur Beterbiev, Tervel Pulev, and Italy's Clemente Russo with a 6–3 score in the final match.

Usyk concluded his amateur boxing career with an impressive record of 335 wins and 15 losses.

Before making the transition to professional boxing, he participated in the heavyweight division (91+ kg) of the 2012–13 World Series of Boxing (WSB) as a member of team Ukraine Otamans. In this competition, he excelled, winning all six of his bouts, with two of them ending in stoppages (victories over Junior Fa by unanimous decision, Eric Brechlin by 3rd round TKO, Joe Joyce by unanimous decision, Magomedrasul Majidov by unanimous decision, Matteo Modugno by 2nd round TKO, and Mihai Nistor by unanimous decision).
