Super bantamweight, referred to as junior featherweight, is a weight division in professional boxing that features fights between 118 pounds (54 kg) and 122 pounds (55 kg).
The 1920 New York Walker Law established Super Bantam with a 122 lb. weight limit (55.34 kg). Although the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) would not recognize this match, Jack Wolfe defeated Joe Lynch in 1922 in what was billed as the first junior featherweight championship.
History of the Super Bantamweight Class in Pro Boxing
It would take until 1976 for a significant boxing organization to fully establish the division. After defeating Waruinge Nakayama in eight rounds, the World Boxing Council (WBC) crowned Rigoberto Riazco the world super bantamweight champion.
Following suit, the WBA recognized this division in 1977, the IBF in 1983, and the WBO in 1989. The longest title reign is held by Puerto Rican boxer Wilfredo Gomez, who has made 18 title defenses.
