Umar Nurmagodemov comes from a well-known and reputed household of Nurmagomedovs of Dagestan, Russia. With his cousin, the UFC lightweight legend, Khabib Nurmagomedov, cementing his legacy in professional mixed martial arts by retiring with a phenomenal record of an undefeated champion, Umar Nurmagomedov has much to chase in his future to be a part of that legacy. Umar Nurmagomedov’s brother, Usman Nurmagomedov, is a professional mixed martial artist and currently fights in the Bellator, where he is the lightweight champion of the fight promotion. Umar Nurmagomedov has been trained by the late legendary combat sports coach, his uncle Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. His wrestling skills were refined even before he made his professional debut as a mixed martial artist.

Just before turning 20, Umar Nurmagomedov showcased a specimen of his abilities by becoming a combat sambo world champion in the 62-kg weight class at the WCSF World Championships. Moving forward, he competed in the amateur mixed martial arts scene, where he won the bantamweight title. Umar Nurmagomedov made his professional debut on December 16, 2016. He won the inaugural fight of his professional career and went rampaging through his opponents while progressing forward. His clinical performances cleared his way to the UFC, where he debuted on January 20, 2021. As of January 2, 2025, Nurmagomedov has been in 18 professional fights so far and has maintained a perfect record of 18 wins and 0 losses (18-0-0). He is scheduled to return to the octagon in his upcoming fight on January 18, 2025, against Merab Dvalishvili for the UFC bantamweight championship.
