Appearance

Fomantis is based on orchid mantis, an insect which resembles an orchid and a praying mantis. It has claws which look like that of a praying mantis while its face is pink with its eye being a darker shade of the same. On its head is a stem-like part which has a structure similar to a bud, all in green but its collar is in a flowery pattern. The collar and claws are also in green, and the rest of the body is of the same colour as its face. But there is a large stripe through the middle of its body which is the same colour as that of its eyes.

Behavior

Fomantis love their sunlight and they spend their entire day basking in sunlight only to go find a better place to sleep at night time. While doing photosynthesis by basking in sunlight, it emits a sweet and refreshing aroma. Because of this, a lot of bug type Pokemon gather around Fomantis. If you ever smell a Fomantis and can’t find where it is, try looking for a Cutiefly hovering around. Chances are, Fomantis will be basking in sunlight around there.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Fomantis is a pure Grass type so its weaknesses are pretty basic. It is weak against Poison, Flying, Bug, Fire and Ice type moves but is resistant to Ground, Water, Grass and Electric type attacks. However, it is immune to no types and thus takes normal damage from the rest.

Best moveset

With access to the ability contrary and much easier access to obtain this Pokemon compared to Snivy, this Pokemon can be pretty strong on its own. While it does have lower base stats compared to Snivy, it also has a higher encounter rate. Make sure this Pokemon has Contrary as its ability. This moveset will be rendered counterproductive otherwise.

With Contrary, Leafstorm increases the Special Attack of this Pokemon by two stages. Start off by using ingrain for eventual healing and increasing the survivability. Then proceed to use Leaf Storm at least thrice to maximize special attack. Use Signal Beam according to type advantages. This move also has a low chance of confusing the enemy which is always an advantage. Finally, Energy Ball is a reserve move if you’re missing too many attacks with Leaf Storm or if it runs out of PP. This is a risky build as Fire Types can easily counter it. You can not switch out due to Ingrain, but can replace this move with Synthesis or Giga Drain if you don’t feel comfortable with it.

Trivia

  1. While Fomantis are based on Orchid Mantis, it does not need to eat prey in order to survive. It uses Photosynthesis for energy, hence the Grass typing instead of Bug.
  2. Apart from Snivy and its evolution line, Fomantis and its evolution line are the only Grass types that can have the ability contrary. This Pokemon is also the fifth ever Pokemon to have Contrary.
  3. Fomantis have leaves on its body which spreads aroma that attracts Bug Pokemon.

Conclusion

Fomantis is a Pokemon based on an orchid and an orchid mantis -- using the sustainability of an orchid and having the viciousness of an orchid mantis when required. This Pokemon can be pretty strong in battle with its ability contrary. However, to the disappointment of many fans of this Pokemon, it is simply outclassed by Snivy who has better base stats as well as move pool. However, this Pokemon is still not weak on its own. It can be pretty strong under certain circumstances when it is required.
