Appearance

Whiscash is dominantly blue in color and based on a catfish. It has wide light blue lips and long, thin strands of yellow whiskers on both sides. Its upper body is entirely dark blue while his belly is the same color as his whiskers. The dorsal fin is in an oval shape and is light blue in color and the caudal fin is in a heart shape and of the same color as the lips and dorsal fin.

Behavior

Whiscash is seen resting at the bottom of swamps where it makes its home. Being majorly territorial creatures, if anyone dares approach it, it makes tremors to scare them off. It has no preference in food and as long as it is alive, it has enough food. Apart from causing tremors to mark territory, Whiscash also has the ability to predict earthquakes.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Due to being ground type, Whiscash eliminates the weakness the water type has to electricity. However, this means that grass type moves could deal four times as much damage than before. It is also resistant to poison, rock, fire and steel due to its typings.

Best moveset

Whiscash is not the best when it comes to competitive viability due to its low base stats. However, it has access to a good movepool which could dominate other pokemon. Substitute, although it sacrifices a bit of your HP, will be a good cover for you. Pairing this Pokemon with Leftovers will let you quickly recover what you lost from substitute. After using Substitute, start spamming Dragon Dance. It will not only increase your attack, but also speed. Earthquake and Waterfall are both powerful physical moves and with enough set-up, you can sweep the enemy team with these two moves.

How to catch Whiscash in Pokemon Go?

To obtain Whiscash, one can either capture a Whiscash or capture a Barboach and then evolve it into a Whiscash. Both of these Pokemon can be found near large water bodies like canals, riverbanks and streams, wetlands, ports, parks and basins. To evolve a Barboach into Whiscash, you need 50 candies.

Whiscash appeared as a Tier 2 raid boss on March 10th and March 13th of 2020. It also appeared as a Tier 3 raid boss on November 24th and November 30th of 2020 along with March 1st, April 19th and April 26th of 2021. Barboach appeared as a Tier 1 raid boss on October 9th of 2020.

Trivia

  1. Barboach/Whiscash is the third ever pokemon to have the Water/Ground typing after Quagsire from Johto and Swampert, the starter from Hoenn.
  2. The ability of Whiscash to predict earthquakes is from a myth that catfish can predict earthquakes. However, there has been no scientific evidence of the same.
  3. Barboach and Whiscash are the only Water/Ground pokemon that do not belong to the water egg 1 group.

FAQs

Is Whiscash good?

Whiscash is a very substandard Pokemon. While it isn’t necessarily bad, there is nothing that makes it worth putting effort into competitively. While it has access to a strong movepool and good typing, it does not have good offensive or defensive abilities.

Is Whiscash heavy?

Whiscash weighs 24 kilograms. While it is not the heaviest Pokemon, it is still pretty heavy for a fish.

What is Whiscash based on?

Whiscash is based on catfish.

Conclusion

Whiscash is an adorable yet dangerous pokemon. Not many can guess that it evolves from Barboach because of the striking differences between the two, but it is still good in its own way. Whiscash are incredibly powerful in the lore, eating up anything in sight, resting at the bottom of swamps, going on rampages upon others entering its territory. However, competitively, Whiscash is not as strong as the other options out there. In fact most Pokemon that Whiscash could eat can absolutely destroy him. With an immunity to electric attack also comes weakness to grass types, balancing that as well. In conclusion, Whiscash is not the strongest pokemon but still a pretty good option.
