St. Louis Cardinals History

The St. Louis Cardinals team was established in 1882. The organization took root in 1875 when professional baseball in St. Louis began. The team back then was known as Brown Stockings. They became part of the National Association in 1875. However, the Association disbanded in just a year. From there, the team became a part of the National League for the upcoming year. Unfortunately, the team was expelled from the League in 1877 for alleged game-fixing. The team also went bankrupt in the same year.

However, the team didn't disband completely and still played semi-professionally. It was in the year 1882 that the team was purchased by Chris von der Ahe. The team was reorganized and became a part of the American Association. The team was known as the St. Louis Brown Stockings in 1882. It was in 1883 that the team changed its name to St. Louis Browns, this name remained till 1891 which was the last year the team was part of the American Association. In 1892 the St. Louis Browns became a part of the National League and in 1969 they became a part of the East Division. The name St Louis Cardinals was adopted in 1900. In 1994 the team became a part of the National League (NL) Central Division which it still is a part of.
