She grew up near Seattle, Washington where her life revolved around the water after her parents let her join the Seattle Yacht Club. She was a member of the U.S. Youth Development program and in her highschool years, she was the member of the Washington High School cross country team.

Moving forward, she joined Stanford University and did Bachelors in Biomechanical Engineering and Masters in Mechanical Engineering (Mechatronics). In 2013, Scutt had an accident during the 49erFX World Championships when she collided with another boat. She critically injured her kidney, broke her ribs and also broke her spine but she came back after surgeries and treatment by clinching a bronze at the 2015 Pan American Games.
