Ricky Ponting married law student Rianna Cantor on June 22, 2002 after dating for nearly two years. Ricky met Cantor at a Melbourne restaurant during the 2000 Boxing Day Test, and "clicked instantly" even though the young law student had no idea who Ponting was.

"I hate cricket with a passion and so had no idea who he was. My brother, who was with me at the time, is heavily into cricket so he quickly filled me in," she was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald in 2002.

Ponting eventually proposed to Jennifer on their way back from the 2001 Ashes tour before tying the knot in the winter of 2002.

"It was always going to happen at some stage but I think she was a bit surprised when it actually happened. It was a great way to end the tour. To go on a holiday and come back engaged was nice."- Ponting told SMH in 2002.
