Michael Vaughan believes England made a mistake by selecting the out-of-form Moeen Ali for the fourth Ashes Test.

Moeen bowled only six overs on Boxing Day, one fewer than part-time spinner Dawid Malan, and gave up 35 runs as his woes worsened.

The all-rounder has claimed just three wickets in the series at an eye-watering average of 117, while his contribution with the bat – 116 runs at 19.33 – has also been hugely disappointing.

With the five-match contest already beyond England and Moeen a fitness doubt coming into the Melbourne Test, Vaughan feels the 30-year-old should have been dropped.

The former England captain told the BBC's Test Match Special: I wouldn't have played him this week. I don't see what he's going to offer.

"I'd have played the young leg-spinner, Mason Crane."

Australia ended day one at the MCG on 244-3, Steve Smith hitting an unbeaten 65 after David Warner had compiled a hundred.
