It was during the 2009 National Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy that Chahal first drew attention, by taking 34 wickets. He became a member of the Mumbai Indians IPL team in 2011 and was included in the franchise's Champions League T20 squad the same year. He was signed by the IPL team Bangalore in 2014.
