Angelique Kerber

Angelique Kerber is one of the few WTA stars who could match the great Serena Williams shot for shot, in the latter’s prime. Born on January 18, 1988, in Bremen, Germany, Kerber is a former World No. 1, who held the top spot for 34 weeks. Besides being a three-time Grand Slam champion, having won the Australian Open (2016), US Open (2016), and Wimbledon (2018), “Angie” has also reached the final of WTA Finals, and has an Olympic silver medal to her name.

After turning pro in 2003, Angelique Kerber began gaining prominence in the 2010s. When she achieved the No.1 ranking in 2016, Kerber became the oldest-ever player to achieve the top spot. In 2012, the German veteran won her first title and broke into the top-5.

Since she isn’t the strongest player out there, Kerber is predominantly a defensive baseliner, and relies on a proactive counter-attacking approach. She has phenomenal court coverage, and sound technique. As of May 2024, Angelique Kerber is being coached by Torben Beltz. Before the commencement of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kerber announced that she would retire from tennis after the Olympics.
