In 2015–16, he helped Frölunda win both the SHL title and the Champions Hockey League.

He was drafted 55th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2013. Lehkonen played six NHL seasons with Montreal. He scored overtime series-winning goals in the 2021 and 2022 Stanley Cup semifinals. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche and won the Stanley Cup in 2022, scoring the Cup-clinching goal in game six.
