Diana Taurasi is an American Professional Basketball player, who has been playing for Phoenix Mercury since 2004. She was the first overall draft pick by the team in the 2004 WNBA Draft as their point guard. She was born on June 11, 1982, in Chino, California, U.S.

Taurasi has played many international and overseas games and achieved medals in the Olympics. She went to Don Antonio Lugo Lugo High School and graduated in 2000. She attended the University of Connecticut in 2000 and graduated in 2005, as she took a break from her studies for the WNBA Draft and the Olympics in 2004. As of July 2024, Diana Taurasi has earned herself accolades in her school, college, and professional journey. Some of her achievements in college are: the 2002, 2003, and 2004 NCAA Champions, the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, the 2003 USBWA Women’s National Player of the Year, the 2003 AP College Player of the Year, the 2003 and 2004 Nancy Lieberman Award, the 2003 Wade Award, the 2003 and 2004 Naismith College Player of the Year, and the 2003 and 2004 Honda Sports Award.

Diana Taurasi has won three WNBA Championships in 2007, 2009, and 2014. In addition to winning the 2009 WNBA MVP, she was the two-time WNBA Finals MVP in 2009 and 2014. She was named to the WNBA All-Star team for the eleventh time, the All-WNBA First Team for the tenth time, and the fourth time to the WNBA Second Team. In her debut year, she was named the 2004 WNBA Rookie of the Year. She was the five-time WNBA Scoring Champion in 2006 and from 2008 to 2011, the 2014 WNBA Assits Leader, and the four-time USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year in 2006, 2010, 2012, and 2016.

Diana Taurasi’s International Championships

As of September 2024, Taurasi had won nine gold medals and one bronze medal during her international career, representing the United States.

She earned five gold medals in the following Olympic championships -

  • The 2004 Summer Olympics Women’s Basketball Championship in Athens, where she and her team defeated Australia 74-63;

  • The 2008 Summer Olympics Women’s Basketball Championship in Beijing, again playing against Australia with a score of 92-65;

  • The 2012 Summer Olympics Women’s Basketball Championship in London, where she defeated France 86-50;

  • The 2016 Summer Olympics Women’s Basketball Championship in Rio de Janeiro, against Spain with a score of 101-72;

  • The 2020 Summer Olympics Women’s Basketball Championship in Tokyo where she and her team defeated Japan with a score of 90-75.

She earned three gold medals in the world championship-

  • The 2010 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in the Czech Republic, where she and her team defeated the Czech Republic with a score of 89-69.

  • In the 2014 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Turkey, they achieved victory over Spain, 77-64.

  • The 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain, where she and her team defeated Australia with a score of 77-56.

She and her team brought a bronze medal home for her country in the 2006 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Brazil achieving victory over Brazil, 99- 59. They lost at the semi-finals stepping her team to settle with a bronze medal after losing to Russia with a score of 75-68.

Diana Taurasi’s Overseas Championships

Diana Taurasi began her overseas career by playing for the Dynamo Moscow of the Russian National League and Euroleague Women’s Basketball in 2005.

In 2006, Taurasi joined Spartak Moscow and won four consecutive Champions titles in the EuroLeague Women’s Basketball. In the 2010-2011 season, she joined the Fenerbahçe Women’s Basketball Team of the Turkish Super League and EuroLeague Women and won the TBF Turkish Women’s Basketball League. In 2011-2012, she played for the Galatasaray Medical Park Women's Basketball Team and won the Turkish Women's Basketball Cup. She joined the BC UMMC Ekaterinburg Women’s Basketball Team in 2012 and won the championship twice and additionally secured the silver and bronze medals while playing for the team.

In her overseas career, she earned many achievements including

  • The EuroLeague Champion six-time (2007–2010, 2013, 2016)

  • The Russian National League Champion seven-time(2007, 2008, 2013–2017)

  • The Russian Cup Winner three-time (2013–2014, 2017)
