Nate Tibbetts is a former basketball player who is the head coach of the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA as of September 2025. He started his basketball journey at Roosevelt High School and then joined the South Dakota Coyotes men's basketball team for college. His coaching career started just after he graduated from the University of South Dakota. Tibbetts’s first coaching job was as assistant coach of the Sioux Falls Cougars basketball team.

In 2005, he got his big break and became an assistant coach for the NBA G League team affiliated with the Miami Heat, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. In 2009, Tibbetts took on the role of head coach for the Tulsa 66ers. During his two seasons there, he achieved a record of 64-41 and led the team to the playoffs both years. In 2011, he expanded his coaching experience by serving as the head coach of Team USA at the Pan American Games. After so many years serving as an assistant coach, finally, Tibbetts got a chance to lead a team and became the head coach of the Phoenix Mercury team in 2024.

When Tibbetts was hired as the head coach, Mat Ishbia, the owner, expressed his opinion: "I am so thrilled to have Nate join our Phoenix Mercury family," he said. "Everything we do, on and off the court, is focused on our fans, elevating Phoenix as the basketball epicenter and setting a new standard for investment in women's sports. This includes bringing the WNBA All-Star game to Phoenix, constructing a practice facility specifically for the Mercury, and now hiring Nate as our head coach."
