Former England batsman Michael Carberry has revealed he has "a long way to go to being recovered fully" in his battle with cancer despite making an encouraging return for Hampshire in pre-season.

The left-handed opener, who played six Tests and seven limited-overs internationals, underwent surgery after discovering that he had a cancerous tumour last July.

Carberry has been in the runs ahead of the new county season and expressed his gratitude for the support he has received, but said he is still some way from being given a clean bill of health.

"I would like to thank my family, the club, the supporters and my team-mates worldwide for all the kind messages of support and love through another very tough time in my career and life," said the 36-year-old.

"There is still a long way to go to being 'recovered' fully, but the outpour of support from the cricket family has helped massively in getting me back playing, and I'm looking forward to another great summer with Hampshire.

"In regards to the media, I would like to thank you for respecting my privacy in dealing with my illness and I would like to ask for this to continue on my return to the game."

Hampshire start their County Championship Division One campaign with a trip to Yorkshire from April 7-10.
