The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, or the Stuttgart Open, is a women’s professional tennis tournament held in Germany. It is a WTA-500 competition, and is the oldest women’s event to be held indoors in Europe.


After starting off as a hard court tournament in 1978, the Stuttgart Open has been converted to a clay court build-up event to Roland Garros since 2009. Along with a prize fund, the winners of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix also earn themselves a grand Porsche car.


The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is normally held during the month of April, and acts as the maiden indoor clay court competition on the women’s circuit. In 2024, the Stuttgart Open will take place between 13-21 April including qualifiers. The tournament attracts the world’s top players, with reigning World No. 1 Iga Swiatek being the double defending champion at the German town.


There are 500 points up for grabs in both singles and doubles at the WTA Stuttgart Open, and a prize money of $922,573. Every year, the tournament takes place at the Porsche Arena in NeckarPark. While there are 32 entrants in the singles draw, 16 women will battle it out in the women’s doubles section.

The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix was first held in 1978, and has been won by several World No. 1 WTA stars in the past. After being categorized as a Tier II and Premier competition, the event has now been classified as a WTA-500. The Stuttgart Open was founded by businessman Dieter Fischer, and he organized the maiden edition in 1978. Between 2007 to 2017, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix was voted by the WTA stars as their favorite Premier tournament.


The first ever winner at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, or the Stuttgart Open, was American Tracy Austin. She defeated former Dutch player Betty Stove in the final. As a matter of fact, Austin and Stove then teamed up to win the women’s doubles crown in straight sets. In 2002, Fischer sold the rights of the tournament to automobile company Porsche, who continue to sponsor the Open. Moreover, the competition also had a men’s event in 1979, which was eventually discontinued.

Porsche Tennis Grand Prix (WTA) Venue

The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, as the name suggests, is held annually at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart. It is a multi-sport facility that has different capacities, based on the sport being played (varies between 5,000-8,000). The arena is one part of a sports complex within Stuttgart’s NeckarPark.

She won her last trophy in 1992, overhauling Gabriela Sabatini - a former champion herself.
