Jos Buttler

Jos Butler (born Joseph Charles Buttler) is an English cricketer who has been a part of England's national Men's cricket team since 2011. He was born in Taunton, Somerset, England on 8 September, 1990. Butler is also the current captain of the England cricket team for the limited-overs format.

Butler is a right-handed batsman, a specialist wicket-keeper. He complwicketkeeperation at the King’s College in Taunton, the place where he showcased his talent in cricket. The Clean hitter has represented England in all formats of the game at the international stage. Thanks to his talents to recognize and manipulate the field placements of opposing teams and react quickly to changes,

Butler has been able to score all around the ground. This has earned him the tag of being a "360-degree" cricketer, as in he can hit the ball in any direction within the available 360-degree of the ground.

Butler was the vice-captain of the victorious England squad that won the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. Butler and his team wrote history by bringing the championship to England for the first time in their history of World Cup.

On the domestic level, Butler plays first class cricket for Lancashire. Butler also plays for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.

Jos Butler Domestic Career

Butler played a lot of cricket for Somerset even before he made it to the senior team. Butler was an integral part of Somerset's youth teams, and represented the county in Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 level.

Butler also played for the King's College from which he had also graduated. In 2006 he finished the season with the school's leading batting average. He had scored 447 runs at an average of 49.66. The highlight of his school cricket career was when he scored 227 runs unbeaten and was involved in the 340 runs opening stand with Alex Barrow in April 2008. Butler also captained King's during the 2008 season.

Butler made his first-class debut for Somerset senior team in September 2009. He joined the team replacing an injured Justin Langer. His debut match itself was for the County Championship match against Lancashire. Although he scored just 30, he was able to retain his place in the team for the following Pro40 match against Hampshire and even made it to Somerset's squad for the 2009 Champions League T20.

After a fulfilling career at the Somerset, Butler decided to move to Lancashire at the end of September 2013. Recently, Butler announced that he had decided to extend his stay with Lancashire, and announced a new three-year contract with the club on 27 May 2016.

Butler made his IPL debut after he was bought by the Mumbai Indians and represented the Mumbai-based franchise during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. In the 2018 IPL Auctions, Butler was bought by Rajasthan Royals for a whopping ₹4.4 crore.

Scoring just 29 runs in his first seven innings Butler took half during the second half of the tournament scoring five consecutive 50+ scores in consecutive matches. He is also only the second batsman in IPL history to do so. Jos scored a total of 548 runs in the 2018 season.

Since then, Buttler has been an integral part of the Royals line-up. He has been one of their most consistent players, delivering at the time when his team needed the most. In the 2022 season, he scored a total of 863 runs in the season, striking 149 along with 4 fifties and 4 centuries. He was one of the anchors who took the Royals to the final of the IPL.

In 2012, Butler made his ODI debut against Pakistan at Dubai. What solidified his position in the England ODI squad was his innings at Edgbaston against South Africa cricket team. England were on 64/3 when Butler joined Somerset teammate Craig Kieswetter and displayed shear strength of his batting.

Buttler got a place in the ODI side for the 2013 tour to India as a replacement for a resting Jonathan Trott. He replaced Craig Kieswetter as the first-choice wicket-keeper midway in the ODI series. This helped him become a consistent player in the ODI squad of England.

Buttler was picked for the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy and featured in all the games that England played. For his impressive performance, he was named in the 2013 T20 XI by Cricinfo.

After being a part of the Tri-series in Australia at the beginning of 2015, Buttler was chosen for the World Cup. In the 6 innings he played, Buttler scored 141 runs with 39 and 65 coming against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh respectively, unfortunately, both in a losing cause.

Against New Zealand, he registered his then-highest ODI score of 129 runs from just 77 deliveries. In the fourth ODI fixture against Pakistan, Buttler scored a century in 46 balls, making him the English player to hit the fastest hundred in ODIs.

Buttler took over the captaincy in the 2016 ODI series against Bangladesh. In the second ODI, Buttler got into an on-field argument with the Bangladeshi players over his dismissal of Taskin Ahmed. Buttler turned over to the players after their celebrations exceeded too much.

Ultimately, the umpires ensured everyone cooled down. Post the incident, ICC officially stated to Buttler that he had done wrong and received a demerit point on his disciplinary record. On the other hand, Bangladesh Captain Mashrafe Mortaza and Sabbir Rahman were fined 20% of their match fees and received a demerit point too.

He was then picked for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy and was later named in the 2016 ICC World ODI XI.

In the 2018 ODI series against Australia, Buttler smashed two fifties in the first four games to follow up with a century in the last game. England whitewashed the Aussies 5/0. In this game, Buttler was the only English player to score more than 20 and was described as “the best white-ball wicket-keeper batsman in the world”.

Buttler was named Player of the match for his 110 and received the Player of the series award for his consistent knocks for England.

In 2019, England played West Indies in an ODI series where Buttler scored his career-best 150 in the fourth encounter, and the team accumulated a massive 418/6 in the 50 overs. He hit 12 sixes in his knock of 150, which was the most by an English batsman in an ODI inning at that time. He scored 51 to 100 in 15 balls and 100 to 150 in 16 balls. England achieved the record for most sixes by a team in an ODI inning with 24.

In the second game against Pakistan, Buttler hit a century in just 50 balls. This was the second quickest hundred by an English player in ODI’s. Buttler also holds the number one position for the record which came against the same opposition in 2015.

In the 2019 World Cup held in England, Butter was appointed as the vice-captain of the side and was denoted as the key player of England’s squad by the ICC ahead of the championship.

Although he had a slow start with just 18 runs in the first match against South Africa, he showed his true potential in the next one against Pakistan with a score of 103 runs in 76 deliveries which was the fastest ton hit by an Englishman in World Cups back then.

He followed it up with a half-century against Bangladesh and England registered a score of 386/6, this highest-ever total in a World Cup game. England made its way to the final and squared off against the Kiwis. Buttler hit a crucial 59 and contributed to a 110-run partnership with Ben Stokes which helped the team tie the game. Buttler went out to bat in the super over alongside Stokes and the two added 15 runs.

Buttler scored 7 of them with a boundary on the last ball. With New Zealand chasing 16 runs to lift their first-ever World title, the Blackcaps needed 2 off the last ball. Guptill ran for the second run but Buttler ran him out and the scores were tied again. But as England hit more boundaries than New Zealand, they were declared the winners. With this, England made history and stood on the World Cup podium as champions.

In June 2022, Buttler hit his personal best score of 162 runs in 70 deliveries in the first ODI against the Netherlands. England scored a colossal 498 in their 50 overs, which is the highest tea total in ODIs to date. In the same series, Buttler hit 150 runs in just 65 balls, registering the second-quickest century in ODI cricket.

Post the retirement of Eoin Morgan, Buttler stood up as the captain of the limited-overs side on 30 June 2022.

Jos Butler Test Career

Butler got his maiden Test call-up for the England squad during the ongoing series against India national cricket team in 2014. Buttler got into the Test side due to the dropping of Matt Prior as he got injured.

Buttler played his maiden Test against India in the 3rd match of the series. He impressed everyone with a quire-fire knock of 85 runs in just 83 balls. Yes, it was a test inning! Buttler made a reputation for himself as a brutal batsman hitting bowlers all over the park in all three formats. He featured in the final three Tests of the series and had a brilliant run. He played three innings altogether and scored 70 and 45 in the next two games.

In the 2015 Ashes, Buttler was included in the squad and played all five games of the series held in England. He had a horrifying run as he had a string of low scores and scored 42 runs as his highest throughout the five-match series.

England’s legendary former opening batsman, Geoffrey Boycott heavily criticized Buttler’s performance. He stated, “Jos Buttler is like a rabbit caught in the headlights of Ashes cricket. A seven-year-old schoolboy would have played better. He hasn't made a run all series. He hasn't shown any application whatsoever. It looks to me like his mind and confidence is shot for Test cricket—it's pathetic.”

After playing two Tests in the UAE against Pakistan, Buttler faced a lot of trouble in getting his place back on the Test side. He was dropped from the third Test against Pakistan and wasn’t picked for the Test series against South Africa as well.

Buttler made his Test comeback against India in the third Test of the series. He featured in the last three matches of the series. Although it was a series to forget for the English team as they were thrashed 4-0, Buttler had a good series personally. He averaged close to 40 including a score of 76 in the game at Mumbai.

However, Buttler was not able to make his place in the 2017-18 Test squad for the Ashes. Next year in June 2018, Buttler smashed the Pakistani bowlers in the home Test series. In the 3 innings, he scored 14, 67, and 80*. He ended up as the highest run-scorer in the series and also received the player of the match award in Headingley.

In July 2018, Buttler was appointed vice-ca[tain of the Test side, replacing James Anderson. He brought up his first Test ton against India two months later, scoring 106.

In June 2020, Buttler was included in the 30-man English squad to train behind closed doors for the Test series against the Windies. In the series, Buttler looked in red-hot form as he smashed 2 half-centuries and averaged 52.

His score of 75 in the match at Old Trafford won the series for England. In the Test match at The Rose Bowl, Buttler hit his second Test century with a score of 152 and struck a record-breaking partnership with ZaK Crawley. However, his keeping skills faced a lot of criticism as he missed out on a lot of dismissal chances in the series.

In the 2021 series in India, Buttler played the first Test in Chennai before returning back home as per the team’s rotation and resting policy. He made his mark in the only game he played by scoring 30 and 24 alongside taking catches. England went on to win the opening match against India.

In November, Buttler took up the post of vice-captain of the England side for the 2021-22 Ashes. He had a poor run in the series as he scored two ducks in the four matches and was dropped for the final Test. His only decent performance came in the first match where he top-scored for England with a score of 30 odd runs. Buttler was subsequently dropped from the England Test squad but remained as a regular in the white-ball formats.

Jos Butler T20 International Career

Butler got his first international call-up when he was named in the senior England squad for the Twenty20 International against the touring Indian team in September 2011. Butler made his debut as a batter and not as a wicket-keeper.

Following the match against India, Butler retained his place in the team and went on to play against the touring West Indies side later in the same season. Butler has been a T20 specialist for England since the day he debuted. Buttler then featured as a regular batsman for England in T20I cricket for 2012.

In the game against South Africa played at Edgbaston, England were struggling at 64/3 in 17.2 overs. Buttler joined Craig Kieswetter and the duo added 54 runs in the next 16 balls to take the final score to 118/5. In the same match, Buttler hit 30 runs out of the 32-run over against Wayne Parnell, the second most runs scored in an over of a T20I match.

He was selected for the ICC T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka where he played all five games. He had a poor first world cup and could only manage 40 runs in the 5 matches with no promising innings to showcase.

With Buttler preferred over Craig Kieswetter, he cemented his place as the first-choice keeper for England. Buttler brought up his first T20I half-century against New Zealand in the second match of the T20I series.

Buttler then played in the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. Although England had an early exit from the competition, Buttler had two decent innings of 32 and 34 out of the 4 matches the team played.

In the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup played in India, Buttler was named in the England squad for the showpiece event. He showed good form and was vital in England’s journey to the final. He scored 191 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 159.16, with the highest score of 66 against Sri Lanka.

In June 2018, Buttler smashed the fastest T20I fifty by an England batter in 22 balls during the only T20I match played against Australia in Birmingham. However, Moeen Ali later broke the record when he hit a 16-ball fifty against South Africa in July 2022.

Buttler played in the 3-match T20I series against South Africa at the end of 2020. In the last game of the series, Buttler scored a brilliant 67* which helped England seal the victory. He was also a part of the record-breaking second-wicket partnership with Dawid Malan.

Buttler came to India for the 2021 5-match series in the T20 format. Buttler led from the front and hit 2 half-centuries in the five games, averaging over 40. He also brought up his best-ever T20 score of 83 in the same series back then.

Buttler then played in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup and made history by scoring 101* against Sri Lanka in the group fixture. This knock made him the first English men's cricketer and the second player after Heather Knight from the country to score a hundred in all three formats of the game.

He smashed 269 runs in the tournament at a strike rate of 151.12 and finished as the fourth-highest run-getter in the seventh edition of the T20 World Cup.

Buttler was named the captain of England in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. Despite losing to Ireland in the group fixture, England qualified for the semi-finals. The Three Lions posted an emphatic 10-wicket win over India in the semi-final in Adelaide, where Buttler remained unbeaten on 80.

England defeated Pakistan in the final by five wickets at the MCG to lift the trophy for the second time in eight editions. With 225 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 144.23, Buttler was England's leading run-scorer in their title triumph.

England suffered a humiliating 0-3 whitewash by Bangladesh in their backyard in March 2023. It was their first T20I bilateral series after they were crowned the champions. Buttler was the second-most run-scorer in the series - 111 runs in three games, but his efforts went in vain. It was a first bilateral whitewash for Buttler as a captain.

Jos Buttler : Run-out controversy in IPL 2019

One of the most controversial incidents of the Indian Premier League 2019 was the run-out of Jos Buttler by Ravichandran Ashwin at the non-striker's end during a match between Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab. Jos Buttler was Mankaded by R Ashwin when he was batting at 69 during the Royals' 185-run chase. At the time when Buttler was dismissed, the Royals were cruising with sure victory in sight at 108 for the loss of one wicket. But they eventually ended up on the losing side by 14 runs.

Buttler's wicket who was in great form turned out to be the turning point of the game. This led to a division of opinions in the cricketing fraternity with half of it sympathizing with Buttler and considered the act unethical and not in the spirit of the game.

At the same time several sided with Ashwin stating that he was completely within his rights and that it is an unfair advantage to the runner if he winds up the run while the bowl is yet to be bowled. Jos Buttler, however, was adamant that he was in his crease at the time Ashwin was expected to release the ball. He didn't shy from portraying his disappointment. In an interview, Butler said-

"If you look at the footage, probably the wrong decision was made because at the time he was expected to release the ball I was in my crease.At the time I was really disappointed with it. I didn't like the style of it. I just thought it was a bad precedent at the start of the tournament. For the tournament itself. It was a really disappointing way to start the tournament.

"So, I didn't like what happened and I didn't agree with it, but what can you do? After a day or so I was pretty relaxed about it and I'll make sure it never happens again. It won't happen again.What was more disappointing is that suddenly, over the next two games, I found myself being really conscious of it and it is quite distracting. It is so rare that you're not normally thinking about it."

"I must be the only person to get out twice in that way. It distracted me for the next couple of games which is why it was nice to get some runs in the win and get back to thinking about batting and not worrying about how I back up at the non-striker's end."

This was not the first time that Jos Buttler found himself Mankaded. He had previously been Mankaded in an ODI vs Sri Lanka in 2014. On that occasion, the bowler was Sachithra Senanayake. The then-captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team, Angelo Mathews, refused to withdraw the appeal and Butler was adjudged out for 21 runs.

Jos Butler Family

Jos Butler was born in a middle-class Christian family. His father's name is John Butler and his mother's name is Patricia Butler. His father worked as a physical education teacher. Jos Butler grew up with his two siblings, a brother and a sister. His brother's name is Jimmie Gosser, and his sister's name is Joanne Vickers.

Buttler married Louise Webber in 2017. His England teammates Steven Finn and Alex Hales attended the wedding as ushers. The couple gave birth to a beautiful daughter in April 2019 and named her Georgia Rose. Buttler and Lousie were blessed with their second child on September 5, 2021.
